I wish crested geckos were extinct.
>>5159772why
>>5159772
Is it okay to get a tortoise if you have nobody to take care of it when you die?
why the hate for crested geckos? because they are popular?
There's so many god damn kinds of snakes, those of you who have snakes, how did you pick the species you wanted?
>>5160867same as any other pet>behavior/care needs>aesthetics>price and availability
Hmm yes... so this is the thread? I have some reptile videos I can share.
Is this a place to post reptile videos, or should I go to the webm thread instead? I wont post anymore if that's the case
>>5161039Here is ok lets fucking go
I found another gila this year!!! I never thought I'd ever see one!
I also saw 5 desert tortoises after the monsoon. yeah, 5! I was surprised to see one
>>5161935Glad to know theirs still quite some out there. Habitat loss has not been kind to them.
>>5161954Lemme pull up a pic of one
>>5161954here's one of them
>>5161954I must have misread your post, but yeah I'm stoked to have seen them out and about. Gilas and desert tortoises. I wanted to see snakes, boa, king, coral, lyre, etc, but I only saw specifically mojave rattlesnakes. No other species of rattlesnake. Strange.
Who's this little guy? Southern Arizona area. Can they be kept in captivity and what does that setup look like?
>>5161987Looks like that might be a sonoran desert toad
>>5161988Do they do OK in captivity? I can't imagine them having a long lifespan in the wild. Dude probably has another week of humid weather before it gets hot and then really cold.
Got a new hide, she dug a little escape tunnel out under her calcium dish.
>>5160867I spent nine months researching and comparing species only to completely disregard all of it and buy a ball python because I dunno I just liked the look of him.
>>5159759Quirk chungus is super cute
>>5161039Damn that looks like it feels fucking fantastic
I call him Godzilla and he lives on my fence
>>5163005OH FUCK! He got 'em
>>5163007Go go, Godzilla
>>5163009There goes Tokyo
I was removing weeds with a hoe and found him sunbathing, I think it is an argentinian black and white tegu.
I didn't want to get too close I have seen some videos of them chasing people and trying to bite them.
would you this reptile
Anyone have experience with bairds ratsnakes? Is the care really just same as corn snakes maybe slightly drier? Are they worth paying the extra money or should i just get a corn?
>>5160867most of them are boring noodles imo so i'd go with something an unusual feature like a hognose or even better, a rhino rat since 1) mysterious face horn 2) you get to have a paludarium 3) striking green color 4) not too big, not too small
>>5163914OY VEY!!!
>>5161987They're iffy to keep because they make DMT and are also super poisonous to everything. Legally, you need a fishing license to collect anything from the wild that's not an insect. And don't post online about it or tell people because you might still get FWC pounding on your door trying to say you're making drugs with em. Of course you also have to deal with parasites and other wild caught issues and a vet might not be happy with you having a Sonoran desert toad.
>>5161931Hope you have a permit for that mate, no joke be careful. If you're in AZ you need a permit just to touch a Gila Monster or "molest one."
Can someone explain milksnake taxonomy to me, so im looking at milk snakes specifically hondurans. >wikipedia lists honduran as Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis >guatemalan as Lampropeltis abnorma >lne reptile seller near me has one for sale listed as Lampropeltis abnorma hondurensis so what does that mean? I keep finding conflicting info and chatgpt is saying that all central american milk snakes are nowadays abnormas and then what used to be honduran is just a locality so idk what to trust
>>5164187Man i really butchered this text
>>5164173Ah shit. Alright not worth. I owned dwarf frogs for a few years and thought they were cool as shit. Wanted a local amphibian to keep.
>>5164187>>5164188occam's razor says he likely has an honduran and just has the species name wrong, or otherwise has a guatemalan and thinks it's a honduran.Either way it gives me the impression that the guy has no idea what he's talking about, which is never a good sign for a breeder
>>5164330I did some further research and found that there was a coalescent species delimitation study published by Ruane et al. in 2014 that largely revised all milksnake taxonomy. Among others the honduran milksnake in now considered to be Lampropeltis abnorma. And for example sinaloan and campbells milksnakes are considered the same species L. polyzona. Just seems the pet trade hasnt really caught onAnd if i had to guess id say that 80% of captive milksnakes are mutts and the breeders dont even know what they are breedinghttps://sararuane.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ruane_syst_biol_2014_with_cover_image_small.pdfhttps://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/Lampropeltis/abnorma?search_param=%28%28taxon%3D%27Colubridae%27%29%29
I hate how many people are in the reptile hobby purely for aesthetics, you often see those metalhead or gothic types that seem to just want a edgy accessory to post pictures with
>>5164499
>>5164200Buy a captive bred American toad. They are common as dirt (and so cheap) and won’t get the DEA all hot and bothered, but still make great and charismatic pets. The odds of someone trying to ruin your life over a single Colorado River toad are low, but not zero. Whether or not that risk is worth it to you is a personal call.
I saw this poor thing dead in the forest today, any idea what these white tiny dots are between the scales? ChatGPT told me it's a grass snake, it was roughly 50cm long in total.https://files.catbox.moe/coxz0i.jpg
>>5164777They're fly eggs.
>>5164879Damn, that's kinda sad. Thanks. Guess the circle of life will go on.
Found this guy while mowing the lawn and helped him cross the road, is that crack in the shell severe? Is it survivable? He was weirdly docile when I handled him and took a tumble off a rock wall to get to the road
>>5165211>is that crack in the shell severe?Quite.>Is it survivable? They are OBSCENELY hardy creatures so yes, but it's also kind of late in the year and colder temps mean a weaker immune system. May be fine, may be fucked.
>>5165222It has to be in a lot of pain to not even try to reach its head around and bite, I should’ve probably called wildlife rescue, too late now
>>5158982Finally a member of the club. Just got this little guy.
>>5160867I like white animals so I got a white snake.
>YOU CANNOT KEEP WILD CAUGHT HERPS AND BUGS AS PETS>YOU CANNOT FEED WILD CAUGHT INSECTS TO YOUR HERPS>YOU CANNOT TOUCH FROGS WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES
Why does this hobby attract so much alt people?
>>5165605the desire to behave contrary to the norm drives them to select non-normal pets.
>>5165605What does that even mean?
I just like tortoises and turtles, man. I don't even know why, but I find them adorable in that specific way when you just want to watch it exist peacefully.
>>5165211Snapping turtles are as tough as nails, reptiles in general really. Hopefully it'll pull through.
>>5165858>Snapping turtles are as tough as nailsI often hear that turtles and tortoises are tough, but in what way? Because of their shells? Aren't shells... You know, not all that good at healing from damage and preventing damage in the first place?
>>5165866Hardy creatures that wont go down easily to infections, diseases, or wounds. They could be covered in parasites, chewed up, lose a limb or two and just be fine if they live an attack in the wild. But of course if damage or infections is too substantial or if their immune system is weakened they'll eventually succumb to it. Craziest thing I saw was a snapping turtle with the whole bottom of it's jaw torn off but seemingly healed up over time.
Hey guys, check out this cool Frog I foundHe's pretty cute and only pee'd on me twiceHe didn't even run away, he just willingly crawled into my hand, is he retarded or something :D
>>5165383Very cool little guy
>>5165937>is he retarded or something :Dhe's a frog, so yes. profoundly. also I wouldnt even consider him peeing on you a response to being in your presence, frogs piss constantly.
>Tfw it's 1 am and your snake is ripping pure ass and stinking up the room
Man, these fuckers are hard to spot in the wild.
>go to reptile expo>look inside>insects, plants, tattoos, some new age hippie shit, temu merch
Anyone got some good eastern box turtle info? Im doing my research currently, but would be greatly appreciative if anyone has some good sources on these guysSo long story short, ive found a box turtle outside, and I am planning on taking it in. Long story is, I saw a box turtle yesterday, and normally I just appreciate the site and let the go on their way. However this one just stayed in the same spot for around 8 hrs, being shelled up and not moving. It was overcast, so not sure if he was basking or not, but it seemed stressed. Last night, I moved it under our covered porch to a quiet dry area, before the rain came through. I also gave it some veggies from my garden, but it hasnt ate much if at all. I did a better inspection this morning, and it looks like the turtle lost a back leg a while ago. Given the condition, and my area is starting to cool down, I was going to try and take the little fella in. If this is normal box turtle behavior, I will just let it go on its way, but if not then I am happy to help it out. Given it only has 3 legs, and the cold is coming, the turtles chances are getting slim. Thanks for reading my blog, and pic related but not the turtle i found
>>5166119That's a female box turtle. Colors are too drab.
>>5166139Pic related is the turtle i found, the other picture was just from google. Probably still a female, im at work so can really look at it until I get home
>>5165937All frogs are retarded and that's a beautiful thing
so far I've only found slow worms and common lizards, I heard that there's fire salamanders around here but I can't find them.
>>5166119Garden State Tortoise is a good resource for turtle and tortoise care. He has a couple older videos on box turtle care and enclosure design.
>>5166156I wish I could see any kind of lizard were I live. It's been 12 years since i've last seen one in the wild.
>>5166175Not suggesting you do anything, but most places in America are within a day's drive to a population of italian wall lizard which are perfectly adapted for urban temperate environments. They can establish a new population with as few as six lizards so make sure none of them hitchhike with you.
Saw this cool dude outside my place
>>5167099Such pretty colors
Attractive Tiger
>>5167168i admire and respect snakes but if I saw a rattler in THAT pose THAT close I wouldn't even have to worry about my proximity to it as I would be forcibly propelled backwards by my own explosive terror-shitting, like one of those 2 liter bottle rockets powered by Co2.
I found a tree frog at a department store garden center and opted to adopt it. Anyhow, that free frog has cost me $200 so far.
>>5168160What are you even gonna feed it?
>>5168165Pinhead crickets, mostly. Got some fruit flies and dubia roaches, but I have no idea if they'll work out.
I need a terrarium fogger. What's a good fogger/mister?
>>5168176literally any, they're all the exact same ultrasonic horn as a standard "cool air" humidifier, possibly even down to the manufacturer and model number.Get one that's in your pricepoint with a decent sized reservoir, and actually follow the directions for use (use purified and/or distilled water, dont crank it on full blast and just turn it to where you can only just see the mist trickling, clean and sanitize once a month), and you'll be fine.
>>5168193>>5168176Not kidding, by the way. apart from the flex tubing and maybe some additional timer programming on the fancier one, these are effectively the exact same device.
>>5168204oh yeah, also dont use the flex tubing if you can get away with it, get similarly size vinyl tubing instead. The ribbing on the cables just traps water.
