I still don't think I've ever actaully ridden a horse before. I might've done a pony ride when I was very young, but I have very little memory of it. My only memory IRL interacting with a horse was getting to pet some ponies and a mare earlier this year...

i scritched a hors today and i had a bit of a tough time discerning whether it was pinning its ears in annoyance or just keeping a watch on this stranger who was putting his hands on it. is it one of those things where if it was pinning there would be no doubt? would it have moved if it really wasn't into it? it was staying put but idk if it was into it or just couldn't be arsed to move despite finding it a nuisance. i was keeping my hands to the withers and shoulder area. i think i remember it making chewing motions which i understand is a good thing yet it might have just grabbed a tiny bit of roughage from the fence while i wasn't looking

Generally the easiest way to school a young horse is with a heavy hand, it's not the absolute best way nor is it the most ethical, but when you choose to pursue a career in the equine industry you can find yourself forced to make a difficult horse safe through a heavy hand or see them shipped off to slaughter because you don't have the time/money/space for things to be done properly. It's a difficult decision, but the circumstances which induce it are extremely common, in fact that's part of why I only really want to care for horses and do light riding in the long term. This sort of talk can come off as preachy and dramatic, and to an extent it is, I just have a big heart for these animals and I don't like seeing them in pain.

When they lick and chew after activities it is a sign they are absorbing information and “replaying” what they just did in their head; licking and chewing indicates a horse relaxing from an activate state into a calmer physiological state. That’s when they learn what they did was the correct “answer” and try to replicate it.
