Hi everyone, I don't know if I'm one of the few people who are concerned about the current climate change situation—not so much because of advances in AI, but because of those companies that consume a large percentage of freshwater to manufacture their products. For my part, I've been buying natural products or products from companies that don't use as much water, and since I know that 4chan is a very influential platform, I was wondering if there's anything we can do.P.S.: I’m not sure if this is the right board for this thread.
youre a dumb retard, climate change is all or nothing because nothing you do will affect anything, you are being outcompeted by third world nations in terms of pollution by many folds, through no fault of their own, they just have to to develop their nations. so unless you advocate for stop sending money overseas so they can build all your shit and dump their waste everywhere, all youre really doing is trying to moralize to other people, and feed your own ego or satisfy your own misplaced guilt
It’s whatever. It’s happening and we’re all going to have to deal with the effects of it, just like a million other things in life. No, it’s not going to cause human extinction or anything close to it
>>5161135>since I know that 4chan is a very influential platformIt isn’t. All those youtube videos about 4chan saving the world tricked you
>>5161203>No, it’s not going to cause human extinction or anything close to itIt will, climate change leads to resources plummeting which leads to world war (entire human population will be wiped out by nukes). It's already happening, just gradually which will lead to pic-related but without the recovery.
>>5161135>but because of those companies that consume a large percentage of freshwater to manufacture their productsWhat the FUCK are you talking about? Anthropogenic climate change is overwhelmingly due to CO2 emitted by power generation (coal, oil, etc). We've done irreversible damage but the recent miracle in solar power efficacy means things will mostly be fine, if we try at all to fix them.
>>5161135I don't think your choices regarding products will do *anything* to shake things up in any meaningful way.Considering current global policy and feedback loops, 2 degrees are - most probably - already locked in.Also, there is no feasible replacement for fossil fuels; we simply have to reduce consumption. No replacement, including nuclear, yes.Engineering feats, such as aerosol injections, won't save us. They're too enormous to undertake. We require *drastic* changes in consumption, therefore I believe in reducing economic output. And I don't think there's any politician willing to take the challenge, because this is a very hard problem to solve. It's just going to get worse and worse. Noone and nothing will save us. It's over.>>5161172(You)>>5162354Electrifying all current intrastructure is just not viable. From what I understand there isn't enough minerals, and we'd destroy the environment even more in the process by destroying soil and habitats. I believe Kevin Anderson talks about this in a Novara Media interview.inb4 doomer
>>5161135>since I know that 4chan is a very influential platformLmao>I was wondering if there's anything we can doNo, it's over.
>>5161172>I'm poor as fuck and helping the environment wont harm me in any way, but I think on those poor trillionaires and their multi million dollar companies and I must defend them! Let that innocent rich man consume everything!
>>5163410This. Everything relating to climate change is systemic, and rooted fundamentally in how society is organised, and if we were to allocate blame fully, lies in conventional economics not calculating the environmental cost of work and a willful ignorance in the basic laws of thermodynamics (i.e. it will always cost more energy to re-sequester CO2 than is produced from its release). Essentially, we've been cooking the books for the past century and a half, and if we fully accounted for the cost of remediation we would find the majority of our economic output has simply been a loss making venture putting us deep in the red. This is a deeply uncomfortable fact that no one has a solution for, and the more you examine the problem, the more you realise that literally everything we do and have done is working against us. To tackle the issue holistically we would need to reconstruct and relocate the majority of our settlements and infrastructure globally, while simaltaneously resetting our preconceived notions of orthodox economics, social contracts, work labour and capital relations. It would necessitate the collapse of consumer capitalism, a severe reduction of economic activity and the construction of energy infrastructure that offers no economic benefit beyond fixing the mistakes of the past, using resources that we do not have access to. All of this would have to be coordinated globally and all nations would have to accept these conditions, likely with major concessions to the developing nations, redistribution of resources and redressing post colonial grievances. All of this needed to happen 40 years ago and every second it doesn't is worsening the consequences that will reverberate across the world. Now do you think any of this is remotely possible? Do you think western democracies are mechanically capable of addressing these systemic issues? Frankly at this stage, buy whatever the fuck you want.
>>5163445What will happen is that those in the top with the means to thrive will do exactly that, and the rest will sink with the ship. Is hard. Is expensive, Is complicated. And is easier to let the building burn than to take the steps to make a new, better, building. It remains me how rich people prefer to let their beach homes sink so they can reclaim the money from their ensure than to take the steps to remove them and avoid the contamination of the ocean.
>>5163410There are definitely enough minerals to electrify everything, lithium is common enough even if it's hard to extract.
>>5161172fpbpWake me up when you're willing to take action against polluting nations and not have a sperg out over nuclear power.
>>5163452You are simply repeating another accounting swindle. The majority of industrial production across the world is in service of western consumption. The west is only appearing to be polluting less because it offshored most of it's industry, a decision made not to reduce pollution but to undermine the trade union movement and retain political control amongst the capitalist classes. As long as you keep buying, they will keep making. The solution ultimately is to be consuming less.Secondly, there is nowhere near enough fissile material, nor the strategically viable locations on earth, nor time to wait for thousands of plants to be constructed for nuclear to be anything more than grid buffering. It is also ridiculously expensive per mwh, requires huge state coordination and locks ends consumers into high long term fixed rate supply contracts to be viable risk wise for private enterprise to entertain. It is simply delusional to still be clapping on about nuclear in 2026.
>>5161135climate prob is changing but all the scare about it is just oiligarchy shit where they want to create artificial scarcity, and control population/implement eugenics.whether its truly caused/made worse by man will probably never be proven one or the other way with all this muddling, and pretty much doesn't 'really' matter besides maybe determining a more efficient lever to pull to fix it than outright carbon capture and releasing compounds in the air to induce cooling.what can we do?minimize your support of evil corpos that ruin the environment with pollution. yes that includes silicon valley corps. replace your cloud services with local equivalents. its not going to make a 'real' difference on its own, but at least you're doing something, and it'll be better for you in terms of privacy, self sufficiency, efficiency etc.
>>5163457>As long as you keep buying, they will keep makingif you stop buying they will find a way to make you buythis is going to happen to cars very soon and is why planned obsolescence exists in electronics>private enterprises>public electricitylol
>>5163445>likely with major concessions to the developing nations, redistribution of resources and redressing post colonial grievancesnah just stop giving them free shit
