A recent study in Australia exonerated cats for the wildlife harm they were being falsely blamed for. Researchers analyzed 11 years (2013–2024) of wildlife rehabilitation records in Australia, covering 52,475 individual animals from 158 threatened species.

Human and human activities were responsible for most known wildlife harm, followed by extreme weather events (which might also be human-related). Notably, other animals represented just 4.4% of all wildlife injuries, with cats representing a minority of those (0.6%). That is 315 of the 52,475 injuries, and does not account for the fact that cats are scavengers and may have come across wild animals already injured for other reasons (e.g., human caused harm).

In addition to falsely blaming cats, it overlooks more common and potentially preventable human causes of wildlife injury. The analysis finds that most harm is associated with human-modified environments, including hazardous infrastructure, roads, entangling materials, poisons in the environment and habitat fragmentation because of development.

Another new study reported similar results. It examined hunting behavior among 2,400 semi-owned/free roaming cats. The researchers were interested in testing whether widely cited estimates of free roaming cats killing “61–118 million birds annually” were accurate. They were not!

Researchers found that roughly 8 out of 10 cats — 77% — didn’t hunt, while only 23% hunted sometimes or often, and focused mostly on insects. Birds were the least commonly reported prey, resulting in a figure over 300 times lower than reported by cat-killing advocates. Once again, being scavengers, cats could have come across many of the birds, who were already injured/killed for other reasons, such as crashing into windows.

This one is based on the number of animals taken into rescue. Cats mostly hunt small wildlife like lizards, small birds, rodents etc that would never make it to rehabilitation organisations because they are killed in a single bite and consumed whole. More than 87% of the animals recorded in rescue were mammals most of which were larger species like koalas, flying foxes and macropods which are too big for cats to hunt. Birds accounted for 8.5% and reptiles for 4.4%. To say that cats aren’t an issue based on this when most of the animals being admitted to wildlife rescues aren’t even the species they hunt is retarded

This is literally just a questionnaire on whether or not people have seen their cats hunt. It doesn’t account for hunting that the owners don’t see, that data is not particularly insightful or useful.

Here is a study that found feral cats are actually killing even more wildlife than previously believed. They did this by examining the DNA of cat stomach contents which gives a far better understanding of just how much wildlife are actually killed compared to wildlife rescue admissions or asking granny whether or not she’s seen mittens killing birds.

>Molecular analysis detected a greater richness of prey items and higher frequency of occurrences across samples than morphological analysis. Our results highlight the substantial threat cats pose to native wildlife, and that morphological analysis alone can substantially under-represent the true impact of cats to native fauna, particularly small, threatened mammals.

>They did this by examining the DNA of cat stomach contents
As brought up by OP, scavenging could be a confounding factor in that kind of study.
>>
Instead of all these ridiculous study methods, why not just fit some (captured and rereleased without neutering) feral cats and some outdoor cats (with owner permission) with cameras and observe their behavior directly?
>>
>8 out of 10 cats didn't hunt
Somehow, this sounds hard to believe

Are you basically claiming cats can not and do not kill rodents btw?

There we have it folks

Cats are completely fucking useless.

Go look at the lion thread. One of the first images is a cat brutally killing a gator. Been up for months.
Dont be dishonest you posted that you kill/ want to kill dogs in the dog general. You got a ban for trolling. Shortly after, with tears in your eyes, you make up a grand conspiracy about it. Classic (cat)schizo behavior kek

Dogs aren't eco-destroyers.
Thirdies who refuse to take care of their dogs are.
Dogs aren't the the most dangerous animal.
Thirdies who can't control rabies are.

But letting cats out is universal to humanity, and cats, because an indoor cat is an extremely dirty and destructive pet. Dogs can be trained and worked around but there is literally no stopping an indoor cat from puking all over the place, destroying furniture that's 2ft from their dedicated scratching post, dirtying tables/counters/shelves and knocking things over in the process, etc.

Dogs are way smarter than cats and can use all that extra brainpower to internalize social rules just like humans can. They've been indoor pets since the very first human civilization, since we lived in caves.

Cats are way dumber than dogs and dedicate their minimal brainpower to survival instincts and basic procedures for searching for food so the whole of the cats mind is
>is there food here?
>is there food under this?
>can i smell signs food as been here?
>are there predators in this area? can i see them? can i hear them? i need to get up higher
>the predators might find me, i have to disrupt my scent trail
>i must conserve energy, i must find a heat source and rest
And for the whole of the 10,000 year history of the cat, this didn't matter because cats lived almost exclusively outdoors or were confined to storehouses where they couldn't possibly ruin the grain (in covered containers) but could drive out mice that might slip in (and using cats works great in a well built storehouse desu)

Those numbers are clearly not representative, if anything you could argue it just shows cats are more efficient killers than other animals, leaving wounded preys off the hook less often.
>>5164335
>Researchers found that roughly 8 out of 10 cats — 77% — didn’t hunt,
That one is real, however. Anyone who has ever seen a colony of outside cats knows the majority don't give a shit about hunting, apart from one who is pretty much always on the lookout to shred something.
