Who is the most terrifying terrestrial apex predator? My guess is it's between a polar bear and a tiger. So which one do you think it is?
>>
>>5164395
I thought stats wise it was a Hippopotamus.
>>
>>5164398
Not a predator
>>
>>5164398
elephants mog them to death
albeit not a predator, either
>>
In biology jargon herbivores are often called plant predators.

A predator is just an interaction where one living organism consumes all or part of another. Elephants are predators. Mosquitoes are micropredators. Venus flytraps are predators.
>>
However while herbivores are technically predators if they eat live plants, they're not generally apex predators in an ecological sense.

the most efficient hunting mammal.

Getting mauled by a polar bear is probably a worse experience but i the terrifying thing about tigers (and big cats in general) is how, if they really want to kill you, you are never going to see them until they are inches away from your neck

*But the terrifying thing
Fuck

>Dogs chasing a polar bear away from a weather station at Cape Chelyuskin, the northernmost point of mainland Russia.
Not that scary if they can be run out by a couple of dogs.

Cute AF. House cats I get, but why are even wild cats extremely appealing to humans

Holy bearcel cope. Face it. Bearcels lost while dogGODS won. Bigly.

House cats are pudgier looking wildcats. Most of them are moggies and not smashed and slammed like Persians.

If you manage to get killed by a hippo or elephant, odds are you deserved it.
>>
>>5165064
for you
>>
Cats and canids try to kill fast so the victim doesn't thrash around, bears don't care so they eat you while you're still screaming in pain.
The dogfags in this thread should be ignored, I think they're pretending.
>>
>>5164406
That makes the term pretty pointless since literally everything is a predator in that sense.
>>
>>5165161
Aside from detrivores, scavengers, photosynthesizers, chemotrophs. Probably a few others I can't remember off the top of my head.

Then you have the gray areas. Are honeybees preying on flowers if flowers produce a non-living substance just for them to consume? What about mammals drinking milk?

Buy yeah, for the average child that doesn't think about things, the technical usage is probably pointless
>>
>>5165161
Are non-hunting humans predators?
>>
>>5165251
Are leaves fallen from trees still alive?
>>
>>5165215
>detrivores, scavengers
You're still killing the microorganisms inside the dead matter.
>photosynthesizers
Plants still kill microorganisms that can't tolerate oxygen.
>chemotrophs
That's literally what animals are.
You see how easy it is to simplify things, you fucking pretentious retard?

kills != acts to feed from

inadvertent/indirect effects dont count

Are tigers that terrifying for humans based on camoflauge alone? Don't get me wrong, I'd never want to go near one in the wild. But the reason they're orange is that their prey can't see as much colour as we can, so to them, tigers actually look green. But it's when we look at them, they're clearly a different colour from wherever they're hiding
>>
>>5164395
komodo dragon. no question. their venom paralyzes you and then the dragon eats you alive from the inside out. the victim remains conscious the entire time, sometimes even being swallowed alive. pure nightmare lizard. do not look up videos of komodo dragon kills, you have been warned. you will see horrors that you can never unsee.
>>

And yet somehow, despite being 10ft tall. And bright orange. They can be following you, about 30ft back, without your knowledge. Then get down on all fours, break in to a sprint and be all up in your killzone before you know what's happening. That's the terrifying part. You can be blissfully unaware you're inchs from death and for them it's a normal Tuesday night. No amount of jujitsu can save you from that!

Polar bear I reckon, It's habitats have shrunk so much they are always hangry, the environments they live in they can smell prey miles away and track them off their scent eskimo's have developed sophisticated strategies in a constant effort to mask their scent, hide their food, always on watch an patrol. so they can organize and swarm the bears. it will eat you alive, leave nothing behind, you are no threat to it.

A tiger you most likely won't see it coming, they tend to kill quicker they usually don't eat prey while still very alive. The man eaters usually have broken fangs so they can't get the kill on their normal prey easily anymore then lower their standards this holds true for most man eater lions but there have been exceptions with lions.

Note worthy mention is a saltwater crocodile 23feet, 2200 Pounds, can take down a wildebeest, sneaky fuckers, can go into lakes and lagoons, their tail whip can knock you off your feet at range then the spin cycle and drowning begins adn their friends bit onto bits and start their own spin to win game.
Shits a bonafide dinosaur.

0. hippo/rhino/elephant
1. polar bear or huge Kodak grizzly
2. tiger, although if a big enough tiger ambushed either of those other two it could win
