They don't understand that social safety nets often are directly helping themselves, their family, and their friends + programs like SNAP produce more $ of economic output than put in. They aren't well educated in terms of economics, history, math, and geopolitics. The math side makes them really struggle with thousands vs millions vs billions vs trillions and leads to misunderstanding about program costs & taxes. Even with parts of our country with less hicks have lots of people making this bizarre assumption that the right is better at running the economy than the left despite the constant cycles of the Republicans breaking things and the Democrats fixing them before getting pushed out for not fixing them fast enough. A lot of middle america just has zero understanding of outside causes and zero ability to think over different time scales. 4 years may as well be two decades for them.
