Yes. Abusive relationships tend to get more extreme over time. The only real solutions is beating the abuser senseless until they don't dare to act that way again or ending the relationship. The government has monopolized one of those options.If you think its a mental problem and not a personality problem coupled with a lack of respect you can consider getting her some pills. If they have no interest in the medication that means they are unwilling to improve and or accept that they are a problem.
