i've learned that IRL people really don't like it when someone has too much freedom, you're only supposed to have as much "freedom" as other people are comfortable with, otherwise they will turn on you with subtle threats and might even get you sent to some place you don't want to go. might as well keep your concerns to yourself, people don't want you to be happy.
I think people tacitly understand that freedom is a dangerous and extremely bitter concept with a society full of low quality people. This is such a society. People are also greedy and fearful. That means they like control over others. For most I don't think they want a free society or even a mostly free society. They want freedom, prosperity, and safety for themself and that typically comes at the expense of others.
