Great show, but I hate the community nowadays. Newfaqs and retarded kids are flooding the threats since Netflix and Amazon instead of killing emselves. Still worth watching nonetheless. Especially the second half is great for its psychological themes and character crisis. If you start it keep pushing till episode 13, then it gets better. After last episode watch Death&Rebirth and than EoE. Rebuilds only if you wanna dig deeper, but tbh NGE has its peak with EoE imo.

Eva is foundational to modern anime in a museum sense, as in only watch it if you care about that sort of historical significance kind of thing, but I think Gainax's own Gurren Lagann answers a lot of the questions Eva was chewing at a lot better and more optimistically within the human condition than Eva does.
