it's a relatable image that can be put in a variety of situations and be funny. it's also evolved a lot - the "feels good man" pepe of the late 2000s is very different from the smug pepe of the early 2010s which is very different from the awkward, neutral pepe of 2019 on. he keeps getting recontextualized to fit the vibe of new eras. that's how a meme has real staying power.

It just took off from there. Then some opportunist in the media picked up on pepe being a far right icon and it's been that way ever since.all due to the r/T_D invasion.
