Location: Shantytown

>The extended outskirts of a far more prosperous city, trailing on for many miles. Largely ignored by the city proper, the occasional plane coming in to land threatens to nearly shake buildings apart, but nobody can ever seem to figure out where they go.
>Provide your own BGM, I can't find anything good!

>We periodically host a web-based battle royale that can include anything and anyone. Shenanigans ensue, and some people attempt to write it into semi-coherent narratives, playing the part of the characters within!

>Operating within the interior of the run down town were a fireteam of UNSC Marines, their primary objective simple yet doubtlessly having some difficulties in its own way.
(MRN #1) Down and out on life in general? Want to see exciting new locales and meet interesting people? Join up now!
>Recruitment. Again at that, the corporal's sales pitch being momentarily interrupted by a too close passing airplane that rattled him and his men and their seedy surroundings. One of his underlings clicked his tongue as the furor died down.
(MRN #3) Damn place sorta reminds me of that Kowloon joint.
>A grunt of acknowledgement from their leader, the man soon getting back to yelling for potential recruits. So far they had only a few interested people milling about nearby, but no confirmations yet.

>None of the three were wearing even balaclavas. Not in this sweltering environment anyway. Thus one of the three spotted the smoke rising in the sky. Looking more closely, it didn't appear to be attached to a building. And it was possibly mobile too...
(MRN #2) Huh, check it out guys.
>Looking ahead, the trio were paying attention a bit more closely, One muttering mostly to himself.
(MRN #1) Huh. I wonder what that's about?
(MRN #3) I smell an adventure, corporal!
(MRN #1) Riiiiiight. Guess we should investigate, make sure nothing's threatening this city and all.
>Nods of agreement were had by the other two, One sending a quick update to their parent ship hovering a few miles above the shantytown before moving on. Recruitment could wait then.

(MRN #1) Right. Of course you'd be with ONI. I'll let our people know and get you squared away in a sec.
>True enough, trooper One radioed the Make Haste who in turn let their Naval Intelligence affiliates know that a "friendly asset" and "pending research associate" was on the ground and needed prompt pickup.
>Come several minutes later, a black colored Pelican with minimal markings on its dark exterior began to make for a descent near their position...
>As it moved towards them, one of the wary but still curious Marines cleared his throat.

>They wouldn't have to stray far from their posts to confront the source, whom stepped into view from a rusty corner to greet them; a girl dressed in sailor's trappings who was short, waifish, and looking though she carried far too much weight on her slender frame in the form of anchors and decks and little turrets and tubes, precariously balanced on heels that were leaving noticeably heavy indentations upon the hard ground.
I was under the impression Kowloon had been torn down by the end of the twentieth century.
>In spite of how ungainly her equipment appeared, the interloper managed a bow, stroking a lock of her silvery-blonde hair to reveal eyes coloured like the clean seas.
HMS Javelin, J-class destroyer of the Combined Fleet! Off on a stroll, yes.

>The lead grunt shrugged his shoulders.
(MRN #1) Same on our end. But we managed to visit it all the same here in the Arena. Well, not us but some other troopers.
>The man met her polite bow with a friendly enough smile and a nod in turn, another trooper waving and the other offering a quick salute in turn.
(MRN #2) Good to see you safe and in one piece Javelin. Hope you don't mind our surroundings too much, heh.
(MRN #1) Right, what the private said. That said, you see anything interesting or worth reporting on your stroll as it were? Things seem to be green so far on our end.

>Between the hairy chimera body, the upside down face, and rasping voice, this "man" was giving the Marines the heebie jeebies, Three flinching a bit at his rasping and barely audible voice.
(MRN #3) Alright. I get it. Need to know basis and all that. I know my place...
>And something told him he didn't even want to know what he and ONI would be getting up to soon at that with whatever "biological research"...
>Thankfully the Pelican properly arrived soon after the brief conversation between man and beastly researcher, its landing gear deploying with a noisy CLANK and whoosh of its rear hatch opening over the noise and heat of its fusion engines.
>A hawk-faced ONI officer stepped out shortly afterwards, the man paying the Marines a brief glance before focusing on Tucker. His features barely betrayed any emotion even at his startling appearance, the agent even offering the coming scientist a cool smile.
(ONI) Mr. Tucker, good to see you. Please, come this way.

ᴬʰ... ᵗʰᵃnᵏ ʸᵒᵘ... ᵗʰᵃnᵏ ʸᵒᵘ ˢᵒ ᵐᵘᶜʰ...
>He began to shuffle toward the ramp of the black Pelican, his claws clicking rhythmically against the metal grating as he ascended into the blood-red glow of the interior compartment. He didn't look at the heavily armed ODSTs lined up inside; instead his gaze stayed fixed entirely on the floorboards already visualizing the quiet, sterile laboratory space ONI had promised him. Tucker also was lugging something with him.

(ONI) Of course. We have much to discuss and potentially work on. But if you could, I'd appreciate it if you told me more about yourself. We understand little about you admittedly and I wish to rectify that quickly. And please, be open and forward at that. Hell, we've had to turn away a fair number of would be recruits based on them and it's why we apparently won't be taking on Fiends when we get around to pushing the offensive back on them you know.
>The idea had been floated to a Gendy sergeant to recruit (surrendered) Raiders and input from the bearded fellow had been negative to say. Thus the need for cleaner recruits and soldiers therein.

>Javelin didn't appear particularly surprised by the outcome of that particular suggestion, though she understood where the UNSC was coming from.
Ah. Hopheads can't maintain the needed discipline to function within their regimental lives; they demand a strange discipline - lots of initiative in how to interact on the field, yet a strict social conduct emphasizing group reputation. It takes a peculiar man...
With little to lose or go back to, yet a willingness to better themselves while seeking a higher calling. A tinge like the Foreign Legions of France. I suppose, historic legions from your perspective...
>Mixed in with equal parts Janissary and Knights Templar - not necessarily because of their faith alone, though it were an undeniable factor in how they socially conducted themselves, yet from how self-contained they were as group relative to the state they ostensibly served, lawman-traders with a soldier's discipline.

>Tucker stepped through the door and set his bag down against the nearest counter with a dull, heavy thud. He looked around the lab with the bright unhurried curiosity of a man walking into a well stocked kitchen.
>He drew a circle on the floor in one clean, continuous motion. A smaller ring inside it a few short lines bisecting the center. Still whispering, since tiny text eats characters.
Alchemy rests on a single principle... Equivalent Exchange. To obtain something... something of equal value must be given in return. Matter cannot simply appear from nowhere. And this is the formula.... The circle directs the flow of power and defines the transmutation...
>A loose steel bolt went into the center; Tucker touched the edge of the array.
https://youtu.be/IXYLDPmIHMg?si=RZeI9CPflhEceeem
>The bolt flattened and widened into a smooth metal disc. He wiped the circle away and drew another.
Nothing created.... nothing lost. The same material... merely reconstructed into a different form. Every transmutation follows the same sequence. First... comprehension. You must understand the structure of a thing. Then deconstruction.... Break it down into a workable state. Finally... reconstruction...
>A third circle appeared beneath his chalk. Two pieces of scrap metal rested at opposite ends. The transmutation joined them into a single seamless piece.
Understanding provides the answer. Everything else is simply practice. You can sew almost anything... provided you understand its structure well enough... Metals... Ceramics... Polymers....
>His smile turned malicious.

>The door sealed shut behind the two men, the ODSTs being left outside. Admittedly, the Naval Intelligence officer *was* curious as to what Tucker was an "expert biologist" on, and if alchemy was truly real and more importantly, practical at that. He strained and listened carefully to what the rasping chimera had to say, the man nodding in understanding.
(ONI) Matter can't be created or destroyed, yes. It all sounds feasible enough so far.
>So in order for things to work, it would have to be quid pro quo as it were. Tit for tat. And speaking of work, the spook observed Shou doing just that, circles being drawn and bolts placed and expanded as the three-part method was explained that made up alchemy. It was even demonstrated to the spy with simple scrap metal, the two materials joining as one!
>Already, the gears were turning in the unnamed man's head. Could the various exotic materials the UNSC had obtained be combined to further things? Perhaps they could repair that Tin Teuton that Big Boss had given them a while ago. Or maybe combine Energon with the UNSC's own nuclear fusion to create something staggeringly powerful?

>Whether he would deign to answer the question remained to be seen, the spy nodding and using his neural lace to make a quiet call for a... requisition.
>Minutes later, the door to the lab opened up again, a dark-skinned researcher carrying a couple cages entering.

Suppose. I suppose I have no further reason to distract you from your duties.

>(I've heard on the vine that 4chan rangebans proportionately less addresses from SEA countries versus Europe and the Americas.)

(MRN #1) I would imagine so miss.
(MRN #2) Guess that'll be another thing for us to do then: get possible pilots for his majesty or just ask him.
>The First Marine nodded.
(MRN #1) Well if nothing else, you were a pleasant distraction and have given us some things to think about. So there's that.

>With visible effort, Javelin would manage to crook a smile in the face of the compliment.
Cheers.
>After the matter, the walking warship would begin her withdraw through the route she originated.

My current condition is the result of several experiments conducted under less than ideal circumstances. I would not recommend the procedure. But... a fascinating pair.... nonetheless Very different organisms. Those tend to produce the most... educational results...
>He knelt on his front paws and began to sketch directly onto the clean surface of the counter. The transmutation circle he drew this time was far more elaborate than the previous demonstrations.
One is not merely reshaping matter.
One is persuading two living structures to become a single... viable organism...
>The rat and frog were placed gently inside the center of the dense array. Neither understood what was happening. Tucker rested a clawed hand flat against the edge of the chalk line.
>The two animals vanished beneath a violent, crackling energy. The rat squealed. The frog croaked. For several seconds both sounds overlapped into a single impossible cry that vibrated uncomfortably in the sterile air. Then, absolute silence.
>The light faded. Something moved within the center of the circle. A creature roughly the size of a large rabbit slowly pulled itself upright. Its body possessed the general shape of an oversized rat, but its skin was smooth and damp in patches interrupted by coarse white fur.
>Long muscular hind legs folded beneath it like those of a frog while its forepaws ended in partially webbed digits. Bulging eyes blinked independently as a pink rat's tail lashed nervously behind it.
>The creature hopped forward nearly a meter in a single leap before scrambling across the table with rodent panic. Tucker gently caught it before it could escape.
Enhanced jumping ability... retained climbing instincts... mixed sensory responses... and surprisingly... stable integration... alchemy allows us to ask questions nature would never think to ask on its own....
>He stares at his bag.
Do you have any further questions, before I share one last thing.

>One met her smile with one of his own in turn.
(MRN #1) Ey, there it is. You stay safe out there.
>And so she departed from these grunts, the men would move elsewhere within the shanty town to maybe try their recruitment efforts.
(Thanks for playing!)

I see. Perhaps with time and renewed effort with us, you can... improve your condition if you so desire.
>No real surprise that organic matter demanded a more comprehensive circle this time around, the good doctor saying as much as he went to work in educating the spook. All too soon, he got a firsthand look at organic alchemy as the rat and frog were transmutated into ONE solid being. A new animal was given birth to right in the Changeling's labs, overhead lights catching it in stunning detail along with cameras. The agent cursed softly when the new chimera made a move to escape but thankfully Shou was able to catch it with relative ease.
>Steeling and schooling himself, the agent gave Tucker a cool smile.
Not bad for a trial run as it were. I can see various applications where transmutation can prove most valuable. But we can get to that later. I'll have to run this by the other Section III researchers here aboard the Changeling, but I don't think they'll readily object to a new fellow working with them. After all, you already "met" with one earlier.
>Dr. Karmakar. Even if he was a bit freaked out by Tucker's appearance. He would just have to get used to it, the potential here too good to lose.
Other than that, I did have *one* question at the moment: what would you like for your codename to be?
>Already, MOREAU was considered given how that doctor had also created manimals in an old novel. So too was KAFKA for the transformation aspect. But ultimately, it was Shou's call, the nameless agent again glancing at the bag he had brought in.

>DAEDALUS sounds cool.
>His voice was quieter now. The excitement remained but something heavier sat beneath it. He crossed the room and knelt beside the weathered bag he had brought. From within, he withdrew a long metal case. Tucker opened the latches. Inside rested a small girl, perhaps eight years old. Her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling. Unfocused. Empty. A perfect, vegetative vessel.
This is Nina. She was made by the greatest lie in alchemy fueled by thousands of compressed human souls. Living breathing... human beings... not corpses... souls bound to active conscious physical vessels at the exact moment of extraction
A Philsopher's Stone.
Hundreds ideally thousands.... forged.... I traded thousands to forge her once more every cell... every memory of my precious... Nina... reconstructed exactly. I created the perfect... vessel... and yet... my will was not enough to bind her soul back. You possess technologies I cannot begin to understand... do you have anything? Anything at all? To bring my Nina... back... I'll share everything... everything... do anything...
>He spoke directly to her his voice adopting the calm structured tone.
Shhh... it's okay Nina...
