Location: Desolate City

>What must have been once a grand city has turned cold and empty. The layout is twisted and gnarled with who knows how many generations of building over itself, with even the greatest and largest of the buildings vanishing in to a dense, all-pervasive fog. What remains is either truly resilient, or waiting to collapse under its' own weight and wear.

>We periodically host a web-based battle royale that can include anything and anyone. Shenanigans ensue, and some people attempt to write it into semi-coherent narratives, playing the part of the characters within!

Battle made easy. What burns carried like a torch. Lighting a small army that looks for others and guards it's fuel.
Fire is used for combat and sight.
Some stay at the rim and under, looking to trap what comes into inspect. Including scouts.
With many enough is made each by their own way and some assigned. Jobs change to ensure all remains if only one is left. Some spirit of that. Of one surviving, and putting all into who can. Kids. Able.
Wounded are housed where it's best. They make decisions on who else may be wounded, maybe selfishly for company, but expected to be more realistic, to save others from what was done to them.
Some is collected. Some is seen as belonging to where it stayed. Like that was enough life to look after it. Like there is more there, like them, hiding, lighting, fighting. No fairy matter and tails is part of the fires. No teddy bears.
Ample fuel is a superweapon. Split forces form lines in between the most plentiful and what can't be lost. Ferrying to where is best. Measures against it all ignited at once.

Some introduction to their values is scattered around. Hints to join and deserve such. How to be if they're all gone. How to say hello.
Shared values, someone picks up something nice, a hint falls, could have killed them. Expected to be set up as was left. Leave some life even be what could have defended them.

People are picked up and set to earn some risk in training them for more. Farming, doing as told. New factions from the fire isn't allowed, but flavours are encouraged. Interpretations as long as they flatter and further.

People who want independence are tasked with finding elsewhere. Given the means to die fast which they are instilled in never to lose. Not for anything. That like their life. Not to be a weapon. Like it's bad to all if one goes through hell. Like it invalidates everything. More than their life at stake carrying an easy end. Can't inform enemies. Can't pretend to enjoy pain & wrong to appease shrinks.

"All's fair in love and war, Rachel."
>No comment from the Chief, although he had to quietly had to wonder which part his AI friend was referring to here in that saying...
>Even better that Rachel recovered from the surprise of dealing with an AI quick enough, Cortana being a colorful sort. One also had to wonder how she and TAI would get along.
>The Chief listened carefully to what this expert had to say.
I'll do my best.
"You're stubborn enough Chief. I'm sure that alone can earn even the most reluctant Zoids respect."
Only one way to find out.
>And upon being directed to take a seat, the petty officer didn't hesitate to move as directed, walking and talking.
SPARTANs are offensively oriented. Something that's fast, maneuverable, and adaptable would be appreciated.
"I also don't suppose you have something that's "lucky" as well to match the Chief's good fortune, would you?"

I don't think I ever really understood the saying very well, if I'm being honest...but I guess that's neither here nor there.
>It's a good thing the Shield Liger's a two-seater.
>The canopy closes once they're both, tinting itself to allow viewing of screens popping up on the sides, Rachel's console, and the back of her seat serving as an additional one too for whoever might be it he back seat. The Liger's shaking of its' head as it struts out of the garage is barely even felt inside of the seats.
"Luck" is a pretty hard thing to quantify. High-mobility and flexible...
>The Liger settles in to a low loping speed, still fairly fast but not even half its' top speed, as Rachel tilts her head back and closes her eyes.
You...can handle G-Forces more powerful than most people, can't you?
>What an odd thing to ask.
>>
>>24785815
"Let's just say that in this particular case, I fully intend on giving the Chief every advantage he can get in a fight."
>Two-seater indeed. Although with the SPARTAN's hefty bulk at 7'2" and half a short ton, it might be a tight squeeze...
>So hopefully he wouldn't get dome checked when the colored canopy lowered, the cyborg and AI quickly taking in the screens that snapped to life around them. It was noted that this "Liger" had a commanding view and ample sensory data to go off of with the screens. These Zoids, or at least this model, appeared to have excellent situational awareness. Something both the Master Chief and Cortana could appreciate, the former speaking up at Rachel's question.
Yes.
>Short and to the point, Cortana elaborating as usual.
"Suffice to say, the Chief is a cut above most human soldiers and pilots. Consider it an invitation to give him your best."
>>
>>24785873
>If a Spartan can fit in a Warthog passenger seat, they can probably fit in this passenger seat just fine. Presumably.
I thought so.
>Good guess.
Hmm...the Lightning Saix might fit. A cheetah-type Zoid...well-balanced firepower, decent armor normally, stealth capabilities for a bit of X factor, and they're so fast that they have to use a special set of purgeable armor to keep themselves slow enough to not go put of control, but...I think I have something else in mind.

>The route on this map marker on the side just changed as Rachel turns them around to deeper in to the island, and one of those panels changes to display a white Zoid, not entirely dissimilar in shape to the Shield Liger.
We call this one "Liger Zero", since at the moment there's no others of this particular Liger species that've shown up. It's a pretty recent mutation of the Liger species. He's made a mark for itself in its' territory just because of how fearless it is in taking on challengers. It's faster than my Shield is at base, and the armor's at least as good, but it lacks a built-in defensive shield in this state, and weapons...besides its' fangs and Strike Laser Claws, which when it powers them up have been strong enough to cleave through other zoids' armors in a passing-by attack. But that's only its' base self.
>A flurry of other images show up next to it. Ostensibly the same thing, but...now with orange armor, and a robust array of blades and some energy shield. Blue and boosters...green and...guns. Missiles. Armor.
Every time it's been driven away from its' territory, Zero's adapted and reclaimed it pretty quickly. It has some natural ability to develop its' own loadouts more divergently than other Zoids, which we've taken to calling the Changing Armor System due to how easily it purges it after. Right now it has 3 forms. "Jager" can keep up with Lightning Saix,"Schneider" has powerful CQC, and "Panzer takes" a hit in mobility, but....
>Dakka.
He's pretty spirited, though.
>>
>>24785873
Also, apologies, you sent that while I was out and about.
>>
>>24786050
>True enough!
>The petty officer and AI listened and observed carefully what was presented to them, this "Liger Zero" meeting what was requested quite nicely. It's base form was lacking however, but that could seemingly be fixed with self-changes as it were.
The Panzer variant seems best suited for my needs.
"You and your guns Chief. Yet I feel inclined to agree since it'll match your MO in most cases. Having extra firepower is always a plus anyway."
>No surprise that such a territorial and steadfast Liger would be "spirited" as it were, the Master Chief undeterred. He knew it would be a battle of wills soon enough, and he fully intended on winning this "fight" if or when it came down to it.
They'll do.
"So, do you just drop us off in their territory or will you be introducing us to them?"

>>24786053
>It's cool man. BUT I do have to get to bed now unfortunately.

I'm not surprised you'd say that...but the others have their use cases. Even the base state's nothing to scoff at. Still...it could use someone with your experience to draw out its' potential.
And that...depends.
>She leans out of her seat to look back at the Chief.
Do you feel like winning it over by playing nice, or being...firm?
>Not that either of us are expecting the Chief to win a charisma check.

Rest assured, the Gusto tribe treats its visitors well.
>A wicker basket is brought forth in short order, not much dissimilar to one that might centerpiece a mid morning picnic, although significantly more rustic in appearance. Within the basket, an oddly oversized trio of apples sat opposite a half dozen strangely shaped citrus fruits of equal size. A large pillowy loaf of bread sat amongst them all, and some seeds filled a wooden bowl alongside a collection of berries, but those seemed as mundane as the bread next to the enormous fruits.
>If this was the meal it would be a vegan one for the knight.
A small taste of our bounty. Mist Valley is well known for its endless growing season and fertile lands.
>The priestess put up a finger to punctuate the point. By the smug smile she wore, it appeared she took a great deal of pride in this fact.
Please enjoy.

My gratitude to the provider of this bounty, and all those who had a part in its' making.
>With that, he digs in, starting with an apple. After a brief once-over, he raises it to his faceplate, and with a sound of chomping down, a roughly bite-sized chunk of the apple...simply vanishes, with nary a mark to indicate what happened to it. His faceplate even shifts up and down slightly to indicate chewing, as it does when he talks (maybe).

>With the flutter flap of Gulldos massive wings, the pair are airborne once more. Winda was back in her element and enjoying every second. So calm and peaceful was that realm high above the earth, the priestess couldn't help but grin. Before long, the near endless sea of trees would peel back to reveal the glittering crystal blue waters of the coastal lands and the high cliffs that separated them from the mountains.
You're going to want to hold on tight knight, the coastal winds are going to take us the rest of the way!
>Without warning there was a lurch in speed accompanied by the jerks and jolts of turbulence. It would ease after Gulldos and Winda found their place in the unseen currents of air, though more concerning than the shaky flight was a rising column of smoke where forest met the sea.
>Behind this towering stack of soot, a scar had been cut through the forest canopy in a long burning line that trailed up to the crags of a mountain edge.

>Obscured by the trees I'm afraid, or by the DMs not so clever excuses.
>Winda nods. There is clear anxiety written on her face but she presses on towards the inferno. The heat of the forest fire below turned the air to a rippling haze of cinders and ash, stinging the eyes of any who approached unprotected. A careful observer would notice that the flames below were moving around in erratic patterns, guided through some chaotic simulacrum to sentience as they jumped from one trunk of fallen timber to another fuel source and back again. Standing over these flames a hulking humanoid beast of stone hunched low, watching the handiwork of his living blaze patiently.

Gwarh!
>True enough, he does startle from it, and though he's almost certainly at least a bit heat-resistant, this is far from pleasant! They are basically little elementals, after all.
>This is his fault for giving the guy a chance, huh.
>In any case, Knight Gundam takes his spear and raises it up above his head. A strange keening sound can be heard before the tip suddenly erupts in to a blast of lightning, arcing around him in an outward-expanding wave!
EM Spark!
>Yes, a "get off me" tool.

>An AOE attack against numerous low HP foes?! This is anathema to the 0 DEF Laval tokens even with the attack bonus from molten destruction.
>The rapid discharge is enough to scatter the mischievous little sprites back to the cinders that created them. Each one giving a final cry of laughter as they sputter out of existence under the pressure wave of thunder and flash of lighting. So eager to ensure their trap ensnared the knight, they crowded at his feet and were sundered for it.
Hrrrggg..
>The laval fighter growled. He seemed to no longer be disinterest, instead now evidently and thoroughly annoyed. If the Laval's intentions were not clear by his disposition, a drawn spear and a fighter's stance would help to illuminate the knight.

>They were...enjoying themselves. How bizarre. The thought is a little unnerving. Nevermind that for now, though.
These lands are not your foe! If there is any reason for me to stay my hand, I will here it now!
>You know, fire tends to build up a bit of fluctuations in the air. A current, or draft, whatever you might call it. Which is to say, I have every reason to point out how Knight's cape flutters as he enters his own stance in reply, the tip of his lance (I have every right to flipflop between it being lance and spear, given shape, length, and inconsistent canonical names) held out in front of him glowing a bright blue!
>And yet, he does not strike yet. He did not say such a thing hollowly. He'll give the Laval his slack, be it to save or hang himself.

>The words the Laval bellows out verge on the unintelligible due in no small part to the depth of its voice. It was as though each word was formed by grinding stone vocal chords, and for all the knight knew of this beings biology that may have been exactly the case.
Talk, talk, talk..
>The creature lets out a low breath, cinders gathering around it's face.
All you knights love to puff out your chest and act all proud. If your mob wasn't such a sporting challenge I wouldn't tolerate it.
>He grips his spear tight, the stone of his body glowing with heat.
But to answer you. I have no quarrel with the weak valley tribe, but whenever I burn their lands a knight comes to cure my boredom.
Now fight me!
>The golem lunged forth, exploding into motion at a speed that should not have been possible for his bulk. Each thunderous step the Laval took drove the hard packed earth down leaving shallow footprint in his wake. The force of his charge alone carried with it enough momentum to fell trees and turn their timber into splinters. He was an avalanche of stone directed at the knight with singular purpose.
>En garde noble knight. A Lancelord wants a piece of you.

>Knight moves pretty quick for his own size, too! Without an inkling of concern over the difference in size, Knight Gundam charges in kind, boldly choosing the side where his shield will do him no good as instead he-
>Lets his lance scrap against his foe's own burning hot one, drawing the two hafts closer...up until thep oint where it reaches the hooks at the base, which I'm sure will take far less of the Lancelord's own lance-length than Knight's. But why?
Hrmph!
>To perform a marvelous side-hop of course, flipping over the other lance and letting the Laval's momentum plant his Electrospear in to the ground, bending it back...up until he retracts the prong! Suddenly and with force the Electrospear straightens itself out and instead launches Knight Gundam up and in to the air, slamming in to the Lancelord with his shield and surprisingly great force! Use the enemy's power against them.
TAAH!
>Following that up, Knight parts ways by kicking him in the chest, possibly even just launching the bastard as well if the shield bash had "merely" stopped his momentum. And finally, landing back next to his spear, he wastes no time in hurling it at his foe.
>>
>>24794232
>Shock and awe! The spry little warrior was much faster than the average gem-knight and twice as agile as anyone with legs that short should be.
>His actions are enough to earn him first blood in this bout. The Lancelord spits out his blazing biological equivalent in blood and readdresses his opponent just in time to dodge the lance throw. A warrior of his caliber can't be caught off guard twice so easily, and most assuredly not a third time. Without missing so much as a second, the golem makes his counterattack, hurling his own lance in response.
Huuuaaahh!
>Think fast ally of justice or be skewered on the molten steel of a Laval lance!

>He does not wait to see the efficacy of his aim. The Lacelord instead charges not at the knight, but backwards to recover the weapon the gundam had just lost in that ill fated throw. If the knight wanted to mirror this action, he would have to endure the tremendous heat that all Laval weapons were so generously imbued with.

>Knight catches it on his shield, but the force is sitll enough to propel him back-first in to a probably-still-burning tree. Takes him a second to disentangle himself from the bark to realize what's going on.
!
>His eyes widen at the theft of his prized and ever-reliable weapon, before darting over to the glowing-hot lance.
>This isn't going to be a very fun however long this lasts, but he still takes it up. Given the size, though, he must wield it something more like an oversized pike, or perhaps guandao.
Gaaaah...!
>He steps forward, clear of the tree as he sweeps the weapon in a forward arc in front of him to get a feel of it, and then the other way, before following it through in a circle, implausibly striking a rhythm with which to keep it constantly whirling around him and presenting a continuous object swinging in the direction of his opponent, while also minimizing the time which either hand has to hold on to it. He'll just have to...tighten his grip if he has to commit to a swing.

>True enough, the lance was proportioned to a fighter half his size but it was still better than being unarmed. What he hadn't expected was that the knight would risk the searing heat of a Laval forged weapon. Even in the fevered pitch of combat, the Lancelord had to set his battle lust aside to admiration of the knight's resolve.
>Scorched all over, facing down a far larger opponent, and now holding a weapon that would have incinerated a normal human.
Hold a moment Warrior.
>The Laval warrior shifted his body, drawing back and lowering in preparation to charge. Molten blood and steam rose from the cut he had been granted in the opening clash, a blow more to his pride than physical form.

Remember me when you meet your maker Gundam.
>The man of stone and fire is suddenly in motion and the distance between himself and the knight is rapidly shrinking. All the while he clutches the Gundam's lance at his side like, poised to spring it forward like a lunging serpent at the height of his momentum to deliver the final blow.
>There were no tricks in his advance, no guile to be detected. This was unstoppable brute strength meant to be pressed to a wall and either break it or be broken by it.

>The spear is truly oversized for him. It was meant for another. It's probably closer to Lancelord's height in length than anything, but that also means....
HRAAAH!
>It's got a lot of horizontal space to work with.
>Knight Gundam stands his ground, picking the twirling back up for only a few rotations for the time-pressure before letting he can slide it all the way down to where the head is pressed up against him, and flings it! The pointy bar of superheated stone and/or metal is not thrown like a spear aught to be, but sideways to sweep the legs. Even jumping to get over it would disrupt his momentum.
>A strong standing leap and a blast of Sabe at his feet to launch him at least a bit above Lancelord's height, draw his sword, and...after hopefully landing on the guy somewhere, point the thing at danger-close distance. Just enough to be felt.

>Above the foggy skyline came a Mulsanne-class light frigate, winds whipping around it and the empty city below at its not-so humble arrival. Preliminary scans came back negative for signs of life or activity within the old and overbuilt metropolis. No radio. No heat signatures. And no electronics seemingly active to name a few measures...
>Due diligence would still be had however and depending on how things went, a patrol of Marines might even be sent below. For now however, the warship held steady at a few kilometers above the city.

>Nothing quite like a 1500 foot long flying fortress breaking atmosphere to have *that* kind of effect on a flying priest, the Mulsanne indeed making a slight thrumming noise as it kept to its alert hover. And with them getting closer, RADAR would detect them, a sensor officer aboard the bridge calling to their captain.
(SNS OFC) Sir! We've got an incoming contact, port side and ascending.
>Captain Adrien Duvall quietly motioned for the ship's Dumb AI, Wavelength, to focus exterior cameras on the contact. Through the fog, they saw the grey-haired person making for the ship. The captain frowned in lack of immediate recognition.
(CPT DVL) Wavelength, do we know who this is?
(WLH) A quick analysis puts them as one "Yabusame" with a 89.3% match. If we allow them to get closer and possibly identify themselves, we can better confirm and perhaps speak with them.
>The captain thought for a moment before nodding.

>They've had hundreds of years to refine it after all, these men and women of the 26th century making good use of it to help track this oddball as they altered their flight path. Getting closer, especially if they flew towards the engine section, the sound of active thrusters only grew louder. Yabusame would also likely get a view of the ship's name emblazoned on the side of the hovering craft, one "UNSC Oblique" now visible.
>Aboard the vessel's bridge they kept watching the priest and with it further observations. They now had greater confirmation it WAS in fact Yabusame that one 2nd lieutenant Jankowski had met with all those months ago back at Dawnbreaker.
>The captain now having seen and known enough opted to speak with them. Using his neural lace, Adrien keyed the Oblique's exterior loudspeakers to address the curious flyer.

The nimble dropship rapidly made for Yabu before coming to a careful hover near them a few dozen meters away.
