Often times we end up the way we do because our original prime goal ended up getting so twisted and broken that to have even a small taste of what we truly want, we end up doing insane and even seemingly unrelated things. As we continue to do that thing to get a crumb of emotional energy that we need we end up thinking that is the only way possible to get it OR the more "direct" way to get it is too painful. Let's use love as a fast and easy example. Somebody wants love, ends up being betrayed, maybe even traumatized. Now they associate love with negative emotions, that seeking it out is going to end up hurting them. So as a substitute they end up doing something with their life that gets them attention but nothing close to what love really is.
