In 2014, an 18-year-old Korean horseback rider posted on Facebook, "If you have no ability, blame your parents. Money is a skill, too." Two years later, millions were protesting in the streets, and her words were on the signs. Her name was Chung Yoo-ra. Her mother, Choi Soon-sil, was a close friend of South Korea's president for 40 years.

Ewha Womans University admitted athletes by interview instead of exam. In 2015, it expanded eligible sports from 11 to 23, adding horseback riding. Chung's Asian Games gold medal in team dressage came five days after the application deadline. They counted it anyway. Candidates were forbidden to show medals. She wore hers in. The admissions director told the panel, "There is a gold medalist among the candidates, so pick her."

She ranked ninth of 22 on paper, then sixth after the panel lowered the scores of two candidates above her. Once admitted, Chung barely attended, but the credits kept coming. An audit found eight courses she had never attended. In one class, a professor used a photo she sent to create and submit her assignment. Teaching assistants wrote her exam answers after the audit began.

Exactly one professor gave her the F she had earned. In her final year of high school, she attended just 17 of 193 days. Letters excusing 105 days for national team training were forged. The training never happened. Her mother got three years in prison for the university admission alone. The university president and dean got two years each, and the admissions director 18 months.

Prosecutors twice sought Chung's arrest, but both judges refused. At the airport, she said, "I never once wanted to go to university. I don't even really know what my major was. I'm sorry." Her admission was canceled, then her high school diploma. Her final education level is now middle school graduate.

Everyone around her went to prison. The girl who wrote, "Money is a skill," was never charged.
