Those tubes are highly cumbersome and serve no purpose other than fictional aesthetics. They should be out of the way and going over the shoulder and a much smaller diameter, much like a fire fighter's self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The material of the tubes also is quite flimsy and would not hold up in the field.
