the truth is the central powers don't want there to be any alternatives to anything, because if that's allowed, real independent popular alternatives, then everyone will end up going there and culture will be set by that.

used to be a near infinite number of forums on the internet you could just find in normal results and browse and you'd end up being compelled to join one sometimes just to reply, and find something new. can't happen now.
the only real alternative search engine I know of is mojeek; the others are all offshoots of bing, googal and yahu. does show in the results though as you say. but it's mostly like digging into a permafrost layer and uncovering tons of sites that all died within a year or two of one another.
found a funny forum just for a town in southern US a few months ago, pretty funny stuff and you can feel they were all real people. talking freely about local stuff, making jokes about local nut jobs and real interests. all posts stopped in 2014 on it, all of a sudden, like a lot of small forums and websites.
the internet is lost forever, something that was very organic and people driven was ddestroyed by governments and corporations.

Discord came in and (mostly) killed mumble, teamspeak, vent. It also killed IRC servers. You used to have channels on quakenet, freenode, rizon, etc for just about everything. People would even host their own IRC servers.
