I want to get a dog. I've never owned a dog before, but after doing a lot of research, I've narrowed it down to a Labrador or a German Shepherd. Which one do you recommend for a first time owner and why?

>>25123493Labrador is friendly and easy. Gets fat if allowed. German Shepherd needs a lot more stimulation. Not always friendly. Have problems with hips in later life.
>>25123493Labs are great family dogs.German Shepherds are for protection. But what are the political ramifications?
>>25123493Get a pitbull
Go to one of those rescues that gets the stray Mexican street mutts from the border and adopt of them. They're shockingly good natured and friendly dogs.
>>25123493Labs. German Shepard's have issues with their back if you arent anal about the breeder. Also, not great if they dont have lots of space to run. Labs are perfect middle ground dog with few drawbacks
>>25123493It depends on where you live how much attention you're willing and able to give it. If you're a basement autismo get a cat instead
>>25123493If it's purely for companionship, I'd recomend the lab. They may not have quite the protector skills of the German Shepard. But labs are also always attentive and can tell when someone approaches with intent.

>>25123493Both typically love to play fetch, so they’re easy to keep exercised and stimulated, whereas huskies won’tlift an eyebrow for fetch. Shepherds are typically more alert and therefore more prone to barking, which isn’t ideal. I’ve never had a female shepherd so I’m not sure if they’re any better / less aggressive. I have a high intensity unfixed male shepherd now and it’s good, but I wouldn’t recommend that set up for a first time owner. Never had a lab but in general they are more laid back. There are exceptions though. When you pick a puppy, the more laid back ones as adults are usually comfortable playing rough with the other puppies, anrent prone to either a fear or dominance response, and are comfortable being handled. Do more research online on that front.
