>In between other adventures...
>>25136958
>The unblinking eye of light in The Writer's hand bounced down the street, joined by the sounds of hurried footfalls and ragged breathing. Wake tried to stop, slipped on the wet pavement, crashed into the side of a parked car and let himself go down to hide behind it.
>Why was he running? He couldn't remember. Was he being chased? Or was he just being irrational, terrified, jumping at shadows? Shadows that could swallow him whole...
Jesus-
>He clicked the light off and tried to steady his breathing. Slowly, carefully, the Writer would glance up past the trunk of the car. The street ahead of him was eerily dark; the lights from the street lamps seemed like they were being drowned out by the darkness around them. He couldn't be certain, were those people moving in the dark? Or, just his mind playing tricks...?
Calm down, Wake. Calm down. It can't be them, can't be. The Story-- it can't *be* here; it just can't!
>He told himself this, but he knew it was a paper-thin hope. He already had the title page. "Arena." He knew there was more at play here than there seemed to be... or, did he? He couldn't remember writing anything. He knew (did he?) that he must have written himself out, so... why would there be more here?
>Wake realized his breathing had only quickened, and he slid down to sit against the back wheel of the sedan, taking a deep breath.
>In the heart of this haunted town, Wake was a lonely swimmer in an ocean of dark potentiality. And, not for the first time, but only for the first time he could remember... he wished for a hero.

>The Writer gasped out a breath of quiet relief as he felt his feet come back down to Earth, and he took a sharp step back to put what little distance between them he felt the Witch would allow...
Gkh-
>Only for the strange, inhuman woman to caress- no, to hold him by the chin. If she could feel anything through those almost mechanical-looking digits, she'd feel a scruffy beard that, strangely, felt almost damp to the touch.
You don't want to know. Trust me.
>The human's voice was just shy of sounding calm. A barely noticeable quiver of some deeper terror slipped out as the scarecrow asked for the source of his 'skill'.
>Once upon a time, Wake didn't consider himself the kind of man to believe in things like 'hexes and spells'. But in more recent years, he had found himself a lot more open to believing more firmly in things he once believed to be impossible. Things he wished were impossible.
I-I'm just a writer. That's the only real 'skill' I have, lady. I don't-
>The Witch's grip tightened; he was sure of it. She felt his throat bob against her fingertips as he swallowed. A hesitant breath hitched behind his teeth before he spoke again.
... There's... there's a place. Like a dream- a nightmare. An ocean of darkness. And it can... change things. Alter things.
>The wind shifted.
I tried to escape it, to leave it behind. But it doesn't want to let me go. It can't. It needs me...
>He looked like had more to say, but was holding back. Like merely speaking of such a Dark Place could bring it to its feet. The man was insane. He had to be. Nothing he said made any logical sense...!
>The smell of pumpkin pie drifted past the Writer's nose.

>The scarecrow doll lets go the man's chin and takes a step back.
Is it really that terrifying? I have witnessed countless mortals gone mad with less impressive curses or "blessings" filled with hexes, yet here you are, clinging to the brink of sanity.
>The witch with the parasol stood near the Writer, her curiosity tormenting the man every second that passed without giving him respite.
Or maybe you have embraced madness to make it into a feeble and personal version of sanity with the fragments of who you once were. Oh, this realm the Expanse has opened a rift into is still filled with so many wonders...
>Her smile grew slightly in a form of wicked excitement, one Wake wouldn't understand and would rather not understand at all.
A dimension of darkness that can erode and transgress the laws of the world, brilliant, so brilliant! Never since the Morning Star dared to defy the Creator for the first time before your world was born I have witnessed or heard about realms where Chaos dominates with its own set of rules.
>Rather than being confused and much to Wake's horror the witch was fascinated entirely about his regretful experience in the Dark Place.
May I ask how you broke the shackles binding you to that realm? And how long do you think you'll be able to escape its shadow before it drags you into the abyss again?

>There was that word again. 'Expanse.' It felt significant to him, even if he had no idea what the Witch was talking about. But something about the feeling of the word seemed to point him in the right direction...
Sounds like you aren't from around here either, then.
>Wake rubbed at his chin idly now that it was free, keeping his eyes on the strange woman who grew stranger by the second. He wasn't exactly a Sunday School regular, but he wasn't so oblivious as to not understand what she was implying about herself.
Then I guess you just haven't been looking in the right places.
>If she was really that old, that ancient, Wake would think someone like her would have at least had a passing guess at the world between worlds he referred to... then again, she didn't look like any Angel he'd ever heard of.
It's not the kind of place where God's light reaches. Not in my experience. And it can't be any worse than Hell. Hell's just hot. The Dark Place is... everything. And nothing. It's... it's...
>The human mind struggled. She could feel it. Like a puzzle without all the pieces, his mind was filled with gaps in his own twisted logic. He couldn't give her concrete details because the specifics were lost to him. He could just remember that it was torment.
>When she asked, then, how he managed to escape, Wake stared blankly.
... I... I'm not sure. I must have... wrote myself out...
>His words came out in quiet, slow gasps. His hand went up to rub at his forehead, to smooth his hair out of his eyes. The other hand tightened its grip on the strap of the messenger bag slung around his shoulder.
... Where am I? This is Earth, isn't it? The- the real world? Because it... it *feels* real. I can remember... but I've seen things! Things that are impossible! Things like-
>A beat.
Things like you. You... you can't exist. You're not even alive, are you? You're something... more than that.

You would be correct, though a part of me admires the physical cosmos made for mankind and other little species to roam I belong to a world where neither the laws of man nor the light of God rules.
>The doll witch looked at the Writer struggling hard to fill the vacuums within his shattered mind, an expected outcome yet still unsatisfactory for the witch.
...I see, perhaps that as left behind inside the dark vacuum. A pity.
>The smile of the doll returns as the man questions the very existence of the world surrounding him as well as the mere presence of the witch levitating in front of him.
Yes, Earth. But it might not be the Earth where you were born and lived before your life changed, for this world, the Expanse and the Dark Place that sealed you temporarily share one common thing: common laws and logic don't apply for a few chosen ones; nothing is true, anything is permitted. Take that as you will.
>The witch lands her feet on the ground, Wake can sense something coming from her the moment the soles of her feet touch the grass.
"Alive" like you mortals? Definitely not. Yet here I am, not as a puppet with strings or a doll made for carnal pleasure, for most. Your religious kind following the God of Law or any of the other rulers of the petty fiefdoms trhough the world called my kind "demons", yet only the Hellenes realized the truth of our origin, even if it was for a brief second that vanished faster than their civilization. You may call me Agrat.

Ahhh, but you can't just go slinkin' off into the shadows right off the bat now can you? You need to *cruise* around first, get a feel for the how's and why's! And the where's and when's while we're at it, if we're lucky...
>The Doctor looked around again, looking this way and that, following the movements of the local civilians one moment, then looking up the next to watch as a series of large-scale wooden cargo crates the size of boxcars zipped along across large rails which connected the floating islands together.
Mmmmm... ah! Come on! This way looks promising!
>Nothing particularly stood out to support his claim, but regardless, the Doctor nudged Claire with an elbow as he stepped past her and started walking.
I think I smell hot dogs! The place can't be all bad if there's hot dogs, eh?
>Had he just jumped from one mindset to the other just like that? Or was he just... messing around? Better yet, did it matter?
>Further up ahead, the brick street wound up ahead of the duo to some kind of town square from the looks of it. Gradually, more people seemed to be heading in the same overall direction they were now going, but that could have just been normal...
>The most interesting thing directly ahead of them wasn't the high-flying zeppelins or the Sky-Rail system(though those WERE eye-catching), but the towering statue of a man wielding a sword...!
Ooh. He certainly looks important. All the important people have statues, you know. Very nice beard, too, isn't it?
>Chattering as he was... the Doctor didn't look like he was focusing on the statue. Instead he seemed to be focusing on the large billboard beyond it, with a... certainly curious slogan plastered on it.
... Lot to take in, isn't it?

>The explanation given to him by the Witch didn't serve to give Wake any comfort. He spared a lingering glance around at the pumpkin patch, the field that seemed to stretch on and on, blurring at the edges of his vision...
Conceptual and subjective, flowing, not solid...
>He muttered something to himself, and felt his heart start to sink into his stomach as he did so...
>Then he twitched, and looked down to see that the Witch wasn't floating anymore. He had a sense- something he couldn't name- that this was significant. A turning point. And not for the better.
>The Writer swallowed hard.
Wake. Alan Wake.
>The word
>(wake)
>almost felt like it stirred something else in the field. Something beyond that of the Witch. But even to her, with her power, her strength, it was as insignificant a feeling as a fly buzzing past your ear. It wasn't solid enough for a thought to be directed at it.
>Alan Wake took another step backwards, moving toward the flashlight that sat in between the divots of dirt and grass, a hand grasping toward it on its own accord.
You don't look like a demon to me, if that's at all worth saying. No horns or pitchforks or pointy tails. I guess you look more like a witch, but... that was the idea, wasn't it?
>A glance was spared to one of the pumpkin-headed witches still hung on their crosses. Wake swore one of them was smiling when it hadn't been before, but maybe he really WAS just going crazy...

Hmm...
>Agrat could sense something, feeble yet noticeable, like a drop of water disturbing a calm but deep pond. Yet she paid no attention to it for she had more important things to do.
>She moved her parasol again, making Wake's flashlight rise from the grass and gently make its way into his hand trying to grasp it like it had a mind on its own akin to Doctor Strangelove.
>No, not Hal's mother, the original one.
I appreciate those words. Unlike the weakling Daemons which fit more the classical depiction of a demon only those demons with enough strength within them can break free from the boundaries imposed by God and enforced via His Covenant with humanity, as well as to defy the collective unconscious of Understanding to which mankind used to claim dominion over their beloved crust.
>Covenant? Understanding? Looks like these demons from the Expanse are more conceptual and subjective than imagined. Agrat raises her hand and stares at it for a couple of seconds.
This form suits me more than fine, plus I've grown fondly of it. A pity the rest are still too primitive to understand the benefits of abandoning a body made out of flesh and blood.
>She saw Wake's brief glance at one of her "fellow" pumpkin-headed witches hung on their crosses.
Oh don't bother with them, as I said they don't understand the old ways are dying out, the world is changing and the once mighty Voice of God that echoed through the sky is now silenced by mankind's obsession with technology and disappointment with their own delusions which they called "ideologies".

>Wake jumped a little when the flashlight suddenly lifted off the ground on its own; then he looked back at the Witch and saw that it was her doing. His fingers gripped instinctively around the cold, black cylinder of the flashlight's handle. Like usual, the strange comfort he found in holding it was only counterbalanced by how much he disliked the necessity of that comfort...
Yeah, well... I know that I prefer flesh and blood to the alternatives. Lets me know I'm still alive. More or less.
>Humans. Always so clingy to unimportant things like flesh.
>Wake's gaze flickered between the two of them, the witch and the pumpkin heads, as the woman spoke. Her words only further fed that lingering terror. The terror that something was hiding just behind the eye.
... The... scarecrows?
>He asked stupidly. He almost wanted to laugh.
Because it's not their 'ideologies' that have me worried. I wish I was only scared of religious nutjobs and- and God Allmighty. That would be simple. Easier. So much easier.
