British narrowboat canals are almost always only 3 ft deep in the middle. The first line of advice from the Canal & River Trust is if you fall into a canal, "just stand up".Not knowing how to swim doesn't fucking stop you from knowing how to stand up on the bottom so your airway is clear. You don't need to swim in literal waist-deep water, for fuck's sake. Why are Brits lacking basic life skills?
