Failing companies fall out of it and newer, successful companies join in. Out of all the companies in that were on the NY stock exchange in 1824, only ONE still exists today. That doesn't mean all of those other companies were terrible. It means investing broadly in the whole index was a wiser long term strategy than trying to pick individual winners and losers.
