gold is one of the better ways to get money out of a conflict zone because you can liquidate other assets into gold and physically carry it across a border. it's also totally untraceable and there's a bajillion ways you can convert gold into cash so it's a popular form of payment for mercenaries/war profiteers getting paid to do shady/illegal shit. and one of the best ways to bribe someone and lots of bribes get exchanged during war.
