Most Americans can afford to buy RE. Why don't you have a house yet?

can't indians, like, just overtake some random patch of land somewhere and just live there? they don't even need WCs...

Because real estate is a shitty investment. No better than bonds in most cases. If you want RE exposure buy a REIT stock.

Had a house once but forced to sell since cost of maintenance (combined with all my other life expenses) winded up draining my savings - yes I couldn't save money anymore from my stagnant wage job. Said job also cornered me with a few upcoming retirees' workloads without any plan of promotion for me. Was forced to sell the house and quit my job without a backup plan. No backup plan since every job in my surrounding area paid only half of what I made. Horrible situation all around, was forced to move home. That all happened circa 2022, and I haven't been able to find a new decent paying job since. It's almost like I got checkmated. Sigh.

Sounds like you bought something you couldn’t afford on your fixed wage, and then interest rates hitting 5% in 2022 suddenly made the economy real and you got boned.

I only have 300k. If I can get up to 500k then I can get a million dollar property with my accountant wife that's in this state's best school district

Yeah but consider that the 50th income percentile for a rural Indian is about $200-250/month, with the bottom 10% making less than $70/month. If their rent costs them just $30/month, that entire 10% is still facing difficulty because of it
