I'll be doing a 12-month AI/automation internship at a large technology company in Luxembourg's financial district. My plan is to use the year to learn as much as possible, network with people at banks and investment firms, and ask how they're approaching AI and automation. How valuable do you think this kind of experience will be for future opportunities in finance? Is networking this way a good strategy, or would most people find it annoying? If you were in my position, how would you make the most of the year?
>>62396768I can’t speak to Luxembourg's culture, but are you good at picking up on social cues? Because that’s what it comes down to. Most people at an industry event are perfectly willing to chat about their business interests. But if you push the conversation where they don’t want it to go without realizing it, you’ll just make it harder for yourself.AnywayAsk your mentors at your internship about networking events coming up, do a search online, otherwise, i don’t know how to do cold opens NOT at networking events…
>>62396768If you stink enough sar then they are smelling your discovery.
>>62396803Luckily I'm European so no saar this time
>>62396798Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I wasn't planning to randomly approach people in cafés or anything like that. It seems counterproductive to interrupt someone who's just having a coffee or already in the middle of another conversation. My idea was more to attend industry events, ask thoughtful questions about AI adoption in finance, and build connections as naturally as possible over time. I'll definitely ask people at my internship if they know of any relevant events or meetups. One thing I'm still unsure about is LinkedIn. Do you think it would be worth reaching out to people there for informational chats, or is that generally not well received?
>>62396768Meet them at nightlife venues, particularly afterhours. Have some coke to offer.Happy spying
>>62396822Everything in this post is naïve and clueless
>>62396825I don't think they'd let me in those types of places lol I'm about to turn 23 I'd stand out like a total retard but sure, I'd have a line or two if that was what it took
>>62396822It feels like 50/50 to me, I’m still encountering people who say “let’s connect on linkedin” but i fucking hate it. I know a successful consultant who starts any potential cold call with a linkedin connect request, he seems to think it’s important. I don’t think he does too much actual conversation/approaching on there, it’s just like.. nuanced familiarization if that makes sense? So for you, I’d be sure to have your linkedin updated/ready to share but don’t harass people about connecting. Do you have a business card? Even if it’s just your name, personal email, and linkedin that’s better than nothing and is less awkward if swapping contact info comes up
>>62396834Good thing he’s seeking advice then, right? Do you have any for him or just pointing out the obvious like a retarded autist?
>>62396864I don't yet, but I've been thinking about making one. I'm also considering building a small website to showcase AI and automation projects and potentially offer freelance services on the side. Maybe a simple business card with my name, LinkedIn, email, and website would be useful if exchanging contact info comes up.
