You literally cannot rent an apartment or open a bank account on your own, there is an entire system where you need a trusted person to vouch for you before the property / bank manager will sign. Maybe you can find an expat community around Tokyo where they are more lax with it, but in general the system is set up to prevent undesirables from living in Japan.

I lived in Japan for two years, housing can be cheaper and quite comfy if you live away from central Tokyo but still close eg Yokohama, Chiba but language and culture barrier is a pain in the ass, groceries are limited, high quality beef and produce is not available, space is limited, the safety and predictability is nice but it feels sterile
visiting japan is nice. I think living there would be quite painful without the support of a japanese sponsor and local expat community
