A totally different friend of mine had a converted van with a toilet installed and a murphy bed and TV. He was getting a shower too, he got one of those tiny mop service basins. I have lived in my car and also in an RV. I highly recommend getting an EV if you want to live in a car, one with a "camp mode" and 120v AC power. Rivian R1S would be my top pick.

Maintenance and fueling costs are much lower in an EV, especially if you have free chargers in your area which most places do. I personally live on public land while traveling rather than stay in one place. If you're going to do this, I suggest you get a tent and sleep in that most nights because you can just move with the seasons to stay cool and it will be more comfortable. Also get a little pop up screened gazebo type thing to set up a desk to work at. That's what I do and it works amazingly. The EV is nice to have on hot nights though to run the A/C as a backup, which is one of the main distinguishers between it and an ICEV which is not suited to long-term idling like that and can even kill you from the exhaust fumes if you're not careful. Also not legal many places.

I suggest you get a big power bank and solar panel, especially if you don't want an EV. Something portable that you can stake to the ground. The ones you can't stake down or don't have a stand aren't worth buying. Get 400w solar panels for every 2kwh battery capacity you want. I definitely recommend getting a 12v fridge/freezer which you can run off the power station and something to cook with. I'm all electric with induction burners/toaster ovens but YMMV.

RVs are a boondoggle. Don't spend all your money on one. They have endless maintenance costs that suck money from you, plus the fuel efficiency is shit. You need to keep moving every 2 weeks if you want to live on public land to a new ranger district. That is a lot of miles, and shit can break. They have every system that a house does, plus every system that a car does and you get the maintenance double whammy that comes with that.

I have used hotspot from my phone mostly and that worked fine, but I am considering starlink.

As far as struggles go, only high wind has been an issue for me. I have a pop up bathroom and before I got my pop up gazebo I used to use a tarp and poles to create a shelter to sit under. My poles kept breaking and my tarps kept ripping. The other problem were the flies. The gazebo stops the worst of the bugs. I do not recommend sitting in the car all day. Even in an RV that feels cramped and depressing to me.

When I was in the RV, parking was another problem. It fit in a normal space because it was one of those van RVs, but even still trying to find somewhere to park while passing through populated areas was always an issue. Walmarts and shit suck because of the blinding lights and screaming low class people. I got "the knock" once while at a walmart too. They don't universally allow people so it can be exhausting to try and find somewhere you actually have permission to park. This is a big reason I went with an EV. I only pass through populated areas, and I would only be parking at night, so that works perfectly for me to just find a level 2 charger and plug in overnight. You literally have permission to keep your car there as long as you are charging so it gives peace of mind.

I have to shit every morning as soon as I wake up so I got a collapsible toilet and a bunch of commode liners and then I just take my shit and tie it up in these bags and periodically throw it away. It stays in a waterproof trash can strapped to the outside of my car until then and doesn't smell. You must separate your piss for that to be the case though and get a good trash can that seals well. Nalgene bottle does the trick. I find this infinitely more peaceful than trying to poop somewhere in public. Making the 5AM rounds trying to find a gas station with a shitter is not fun.

I also shower with a little electric pump style shower that I submerge in hot water in a bucket. Fuck going to a gym to shower, that severely limits your options for places to camp

Also, if you are a digital nomad doing this style of public land living, you should know maintenance is annoying as fuck while living in your car. If you want to do your own maintenance then you need somewhere to keep all your tools. In the car is almost impossible. Like even just having a set of jack stands is gonna take up so much fucking space and weight, let alone everything else you need. I keep my tools at my parents house and go to my sister's house to rotate my tires which is the only regular maintenance needed on an EV. When I had the ICE RV, the maintenance was such a fucking bitch. I had to pay other people to do it and they robbed me blind every time. Hybrids are actually slightly cheaper to fuel compared to EVs when relying on public charging, but the maintenance costs are even worse than a normal ICEV. Anything that is not routine, like it breaks out in the field is going to fuck you in the wallet and be so fucking annoying to deal with. Have some funds set aside for this always.

I know you already have a Rav4 but I say all this because you can sell it and buy something else with the money you get. You have to think of all your systems as connected. How are you going to cook, clean, shower, etc? If you don't have a way to supply electricity from an EV, you have to get stuff like camp stoves and propane bottles that you need to refill constantly. I follow the urban car living sub and most of those people live in something like an Rav4 and they just feel like peasants to me, complaining about shit like having to eat pre-made grocery store food all the time because they can't cook in their car. I would personally never do the whole urban car living thing where you are tied to one spot due to a physical wage slaving job. It sounds like hell.

I can go there for any reason, see my family, cook food, shit/shower (though I'll use the Gym for that most days). I plan to meal prep for the week there each weekend. So the only power source I'll need is for my 2 laptops for my 2 jobs. I won't need a fridge, probably just a cooler for storing food or something. Any food I need to store I can keep at the in laws and grab the night before or something.

I fully plan to sell the Rav4 because it was a dogshit financial decision (the car is my wife's). That's a whole story that I don't need to get into. But I am definitely planning on downgrading to a used minivan or anything like that. With your input, I'll look into what EV/Hybrid options are available.

One good thing about Vegas is that everything is AT MOST 30 min away driving. I have 24/7 gym access and they have multiple locations. If I can suck up the discomfort of sleeping in a car, and the elements, my only challenge is consistent wifi/power for the laptops. And a comfortable work station.

I expect car maintenance may also be a bitch, I've never owned a car in my life (grew up in NYC, and even after moving to the west coast I kept figuring out ways to get by just fine with no car, then met wife and she already had car) so I don't know much about them. The main wear on the car is likely going to be AC/cooling related.

The only possibility in which someone with an IQ as low as you could reproduce is if you are also brown.

If you're planning to stay in one place, then your main concern becomes parking because it's not legal to sleep in your car most places these days. The cops consider it "camping" which is banned most places outside of parks and stuff like that. If you want to do it on public land where it's actually allowed, you can only stay for 2 weeks at a time before having to move. Depending on the location and the enforcement by the rangers in the area you can sometimes get away with much longer than that, but if you're planning on staying somewhere close to your in laws then you're planning on getting lucky. Otherwise, you will need to do a lot of driving back and forth if you plan to do all your cooking and stuff at their house.

-You will attract attention. People who "need" something will come up to you. A bum who needs a cigarette or money, someone who is having car troubles, someone will walk over to see if your "alright". People will also loiter near you. Someone walking their dog will come up next to your vehicle. Someone else living in their car will park next to you and you will have to listen to him and his wife argue. Of course we must also remember SECURITY. Public security guards are very numerous, most businesses have one or have on assigned to the plaza they work out of. The recent homelessness increase has increased this type of work.

-Tinted windows are obviously important. You will likely accumulate much trash, you should eat your food outside due to the smell, unexpected shits can happen.

-People can mess with your car in a variety of ways. I had someone smash my window while I was in the library. They also swapped my battery out which wasn't something I thought could happen.

-Your mental health will decline. Do not underestimate what not having your own room, bed and bathroom does. You have likely lived a standard American life. You are probably not built for this. You might be after it's all said and done or if you started training like an outdoorsman, but right now you are likely too addicted to creature comforts you aren't aware of. There's lots of compromises to be made and things to consider hard before entering that sort of living arrangement. I've watched hours and hours of vanlife videos taking notes.

I could never do it in a car though, that's fucked, long wheelbase van at a minimum as a stealth build so it's not entirely obvious you are in there.
A camper van is too obvious and you are asking for trouble, everyone from robbers to police will be in your business if you are seen pulled up in a camper. Same goes for a car, just asking to get harassed.

Paid About 190k for the home and the taxable value is 365k, zestimate was actually close to 450k in 2022. Realistically it’s worth 350 all day long.
It was a lot of work though even just cleaning it out took a month probably all the junk from the previous owner, then it needed paint, trim, floors, cabinets, appliances, yard work. I did it all myself so it only costed maybe 15k total in materials. Hiring people probably would have been like 50k. I don’t regret it at all though it was a good move

in vegas if you dont mind going out to the outskirts, just hit up lake mead camping (go when the toll booths are closed) and you get up to 14 days. Then swap over to mt charleston to the north for the free camping spots the rest of the month. You can even rotate to red rock canyon or further up to those locations if need be. cumulatively ive spent over a year living mobile. living in any car sucks dick, you want something you can easily sit up and lay down flat, so big. I have no idea how you think you'd save 30k let alone 60k after a year but ill let you work that out. driving isnt free. gas and maintenance insurance isn't free. buying tiny quantities over bulk prep is dramatically more expensive. certainly not impossible to do on the cheap but when you start trying to cut out costs like having a stove and fuel for it the pain in the ass factor goes up very quickly.

The poster I replied to has it right about living comfortably in a car. My advice was/is purely for proper bumming in any vehicle. You just need to cover the windows, and have them COMPLETELY covered so you have no eyes peeping in on you from any angle. It's psychological some people are animals and sleep in the open, it's not healthy or a good night's sleep.
Other than that, good luck. Takeout is a lot easier than using a gas stove. You'll be doing an extra 50-100km a day just trying to find good spots to bum around and sleep, especially if you want to set up a chair a stove. If you're clever with your DIY blinders you can even make screens with vents on your blinders so you get some fresh air.

You get some overtime/travel pay, everyone is a bit more cozy, and you stop by on the weekend a couple times to get personal time with your wife.

Her are some more tips for anyone looking to sleep in their car:
-Again, window covers. The more secure and simple to remove the better. You can have separate screens to place in the open windows also, or make some sort of hybrid screen/cover with vents. If you're an animal who is okay with eyeballs looking at you while you sleep, you can skip that. (You probably won't like it.)
-A gas stove and dishes are more trouble than they are worth. If you have some sort of travel route planned and are visiting parks you can do this more easily. They'll have tables to cook on and places to do your dishes. Disposable utensils and a cooler for supermarket deli. Welcome to diarrhea town, but it's a bit cheaper than takeout. A lot cheaper if you eat like an animal.
-Taking the backseat out is obviously a good move. If you're a homeless bum, where are you going to store it?
-Use a foam sleeping pad instead of a mattress. Air mattresses aren't expensive but they break often and you will be annoyed by them.
-If you're sleeping in the driver's seat, keep a tent and a foam mattress with you. Your lower extremities need a proper rest every now and then, and a night rolling around in a tent is cheaper (and maybe cleaner) than a motel...
