pretty sure I paid less taxes than this and made more money working part time at UPS. what state do you live in, OP. that is an insane amount of money to lose to taxes for someone only grossing 40k.

should argue with payroll that you "earned that over the course of a year and, therefore, it should be taxed as such," We did that at my old workplace for our "years of service" checks - made everyone much happier to get a check that would buy more than a case of beer for a change.
