At the start these projects promise to become as decentralized as possible, spreading token supply widely and allowing anyone to run sequencers and whatever. But when they get an offer from VCs that makes them guaranteed multimillionaires they abandon all their beliefs. This happened with basically all L2s in 2020. There is still not a single truly decentralized L2 out there.

Instead everyone just dumped them for ETH or cash or playstations lol. Many second rounds of airdrops had better incentives but they were 10-100 times smaller and no one really cared anymore. Then airdrop farming became so huge any future airdrops like Starknet and ZKsync were complete shit in many different ways. Users, dapp devs and literally anyone didn't receive anything because the requirements were completely fucked up. The way forward isn't with airdrops, but with something like Uniswap's continuous clearing auction smart contract and similar "auction ICOs".Also lack of VCs is the main reason why Base is doing so well, it's funded by Coinbase directly and there's no pressure to launch a cash grab governance token. But even they lied about turning the rollup into stage 2, probably because centralized sequencers make lots of money and it's hard to abandon that afterwards (maybe impossible for a public company with a profit motive). They farmed users (bots) with the possibility of an airdrop because a stage 2 rollup would need a token for staking.
