Never put in 100% effort. Work at a steady 40% effort and only rarely increase to a maximum of 80% when necessary. If you try to impress your bosses and set the bar too high that will be expected of you at all times, and since most managers assume you are already doing the above, they will expect you to be able to pick up your pace during "emergencies"
Wagies who are essential to operations rarely get promoted, so ironically being too good at your job can stifle your career advancement

Act dumber than you are, work slower, don't ever offer to do anything extra.The people who did 120% didn't get a promotion or fat pay raises, just more responsibility, more stress, and were the first out the door come redundancy time.Most companies you are paid for the role, not your experience or value to the company, just the role and within the salary bracket that role has.Life isn't a movie.

I got into contracting work (white collar labour hire) because it lets you sit completely outside the company's regular pay structure. I've built my entire career on my ability to do 5x as much work as my colleagues, and while I'm not exactly getting twice as much as them, it's not far off. Senior engineers get $120-130k at my company, and I'm on $210k. But other seniors are expected to run projects, and I just do grunt work all day.
