Because the Japanese government has long maintained negative interest rates, the cost of borrowing yen is effectively zero.
A large number of financiers borrow yen to make substantial overseas financial investments.
The global financial industry has become heavily reliant on yen-denominated borrowing.
In 2020, the pandemic caused the yen to depreciate sharply, and Japan experienced severe inflation.
The Bank of Japan must raise interest rates; otherwise, the yen will continue to depreciate.
Once the Bank of Japan begins raising interest rates, yen carry trades will come to an end, which is highly likely to trigger a global financial crisis.
Currently, the Bank of Japan is reluctant to raise interest rates and is instead relying on government intervention to buy yen and prop up the market.
This is virtually meaningless, as the yen will continue to depreciate after a brief rebound. All the money used to prop up the market has been pocketed by financiers.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government has effectively blocked any increase in Japanese interest rates.
What exactly should Japan do?
If it doesn’t raise interest rates, it will fall into hyperinflation.
If it raises interest rates, the global financial sector will immediately plunge into crisis, and it will also provoke the United States.

I don't actually believe there is any easy solution.

If interest rates rise, beyond what you've mentioned it'll create a Japanese death spiral from rising interest on the debt, which further increases interest rates.

The collateral impact on global economies is significant in any circumstance. The best decisions at this point merely delay the inevitable.

If all that money were used to buy yen, it would immediately cause the yen to appreciate, and trigger a financial tsunami.
But simply buying yen is pointless.
The yen’s value would begin to fall again within a matter of weeks, and all that money would go down the drain.
To stop the yen from depreciating, the Bank of Japan must raise interest rates.
Otherwise, you’re simply throwing your money into a fire to use as fuel.

After a total economic collapse, the Japanese will once again turn to fascism.
Just as the Weimar Republic gave way to Nazi Germany.
Because, aside from the far right, the Japanese have no other choice.
And then war will break out.
Because China, South Korea, North Korea, and Russia will absolutely not allow Japan to become fascist again.
This is also why China has imposed sanctions on Japan regarding dual-use goods—because they know Japan wants to go to war.
Japan has a population of 120 million, but its land can only support 30 million people.
Either 90 million people will starve to death, or they will be sent off to war.

Doing so would be utterly retarded. Actually the most retarded thing is not just surrendering to Iran quickly to avoid the unnecessary oil crisis he started. All he understands about monetary policy is money printers go brrrr, his stocks and other assets get pumped. He does not understand the risks that persistently high inflation has to an economy. If the USD starts to inflate long term, other countries will drop it as the reserve currency and go for something more stable. When they raise rates, there will be a recession almost guaranteed, but it would still be retarded not to raise them. Lowering them is not even being discussed because of the sheer levels of retardation it would take to do that.

The Plaza Accord and the Appreciation of the Yen.
The Plaza Accord between the United States and Japan forced the Japanese government and banks to appreciate the yen, leading to a severe economic bubble in Japan.
The economic bubble caused labor costs in Japan to rise, damaging the country’s export sector.
This ultimately led to three decades of prolonged deflation and economic stagnation.
Every Japanese economist knew that the Plaza Accord would destroy Japan’s economy, but no one could stop it.
Because Japan was a colony of the United States.

ignorant retard here. I don't get how this is bad for japan.
it's not bad for the japanese exporters, it makes their products cheaper, thus more competitive. this includes car makers, tech companies like sony and many others, and so on.
the tourism industry also benefits.
as far as I understand, it's also not bad for those who have debt in japan and benefited from the carry trade, as long as their debt is in fixed interest rate, the rate is low or the value of the yen keeps falling. I'm not sure how this affects japan itself. I mean, the organization that borrowed yen will have to buy yen over time to pay that money, right? this should stabilize it somewhat... unless it's being manipulated, of course.
they will probably end up devaluing their currency, like poor countries do all the time.
only problem I can see here is that the US doesn't benefit from this at all.

of course the ones that lose from this is the common japanese citizen. they are becoming poorer until the inflation stops.

I guess there is a balance for all of the above. I don't know where it is, though. also, I guess they will probably end up devaluing their currency at some point.

can someone post some analysis or give me some pointers on how this affects japan?

>>
>>62558352
>it's not bad for the japanese exporters, it makes their products cheaper, thus more competitive. this includes car makers, tech companies like sony and many others, and so on.

Actually, no.
The excessive devaluation of the yen is plunging Japan into hyperinflation.
Japan’s industrial sector is strong, but the problem is that, as an island nation, Japan is extremely resource-poor and relies on imports for almost everything.
It imports food, minerals, timber, and oil—even chopsticks.
The excessive devaluation of the yen has caused prices for all imported goods to rise. Moreover, Japanese importers have virtually no bargaining power because Japan lacks everything and must purchase everything.
As for industry, due to diplomatic tensions between Japan and China, China has banned the export of rare earths and other critical materials to Japan. This has forced Japan’s industrial sector to grind to a halt, with a large number of factories closing down every month.
Furthermore, on the export front, Japan’s gasoline-powered cars simply cannot compete with China’s electric vehicles.
Currently, 70 percent of Japanese car exports are destined for the United States.
In Europe, Chinese electric vehicles are gradually pushing Japanese and European automakers out of the market.
The depreciation of the yen is, in fact, killing Japanese industry, as Japanese factories can no longer afford various critical materials.
As for the tourism industry, Japan is the most xenophobic country in all of Asia.
Now that Chinese tourists have left, they’ve started blaming Thai or Vietnamese tourists for littering and polluting their country.
It’s only a matter of time before Japan’s tourism industry is ruined by its far-right populists.

You can, as long as you have nuclear weapons.
The fact that China’s economy is currently mired in deflation is intentional on the part of the government, with the aim of keeping labor costs as low as possible so that Chinese manufacturing can destroy Europe’s industrial base and thereby establish a technological monopoly.
The EU foolishly wants China to sign the Plaza 2.0 agreement, forcing China to revalue the yuan by 20%. Otherwise, the EU will impose sanctions.
The Chinese government just told them to fuck off.

Japan cannot hyperinflate. It lacks the economy to do so primarily because it imports energy. A hyperinflation scenario would imply that there is excess production and energy capacity that currency can chase after and when money is dumped into the economy there is a place for it to go. The Japanese economy is already weak. Any more currency injected into it has nowhere to go. Assets are already universally crushed everywhere outside of Tokyo and there isn't a line of opportunistic buyers ready to scavenge value out of the corpse that is the Japanese economy. The most likely result of lower rates is the real price of japanese assets falling and the market crashing as investors realize that the party is definitely over for the japanese economy. Forget the carry trade, watch instead as real value leaves the yen and the United States has to dollarize Japan in order to keep it functional with tighter integration.
>>
>>62558667
Japan doesn't deserve to end this way...
>>
>>62558667
That is not hyperinflation though. A cost of living crisis doesn't mean hyperinflation (Though it can run concurrently). A hyperinflation scenario is something far worse and it would mean that effectively yen can buy absolutely nothing because there is no taker for the currency. That would also mean that assets still retain their real value and that if you bought in another currency you would get a discount but the asset still had some value. Japanese assets are worthless. If rates go down we get even worse deflation as investors realize that the price of japanese assets and productivity is even lower than how low it is now,

Well, the Bank of Japan could simply stop the yen’s continued depreciation by raising interest rates, thereby curbing inflation.
The problem is that the U.S. government won’t allow Japan to raise interest rates, because that would destroy yen carry trades and, in turn, destabilize global financial markets.
That’s why we’re seeing the current situation: no interest rate hikes, but constant waste of central bank reserves to buy yen,a pointless act of government intervention.
It accomplishes nothing but wasting money.
>>

Jap rice is expensive cause of their retarded agricultural system and one government owned firm being a monopolist. Farmers can't grow and even if they could, there's no insentive as they would have to sell on whatever the government tells them to.
>>
>>62558687
>Why?????
This was the outcome of last year’s trade negotiations between the United States and China.
Both sides lifted their tariff sanctions, and China exported rare earth minerals to the U.S. government.
But the condition was that the U.S. government had to export gold to China.
And that was the U.S. government’s gold, not President Trump’s.
Trump likely made a fortune as a result.

Yes, there are going to be riots and probably a few demrat states trying quasi secession, but that's what the military is for.

It isint purely a Japan problem. Japan is the philosophical and practical root locus of the entire Keynesian macroeconomic order. The yen carry trade has been expanding for 40 years, it’s an idiosyncratic risk not only to the treasury markets funding but the US stock market as well. The treasury and the BOJ just juiced the yen with ~60billion USD over two days and they couldn’t raise it above the downward resistance. The system is at its end of life and the yen is particularly fucked because of the BOJs ownership stake in Japanese gov bonds, the bond market and the currency will fall together in a positive feedback system. The fiat Möbius strip is inverting and it’s not possible to stop.

> and if the Japanese government continues its policy of not raising interest rates, Japan will fall into hyperinflation.
That not true anymore. Traditional macroeconomic wisdom states the bond market and the currency move inversely, but that logic breaks when the BOJ owns 50% of all Japanese government bonds.

For 40 years Japan has been used by the international bankers as a source of free money. The raped the Japanese so goddamn hard in the 90s that the entire nation was Stockholmed, used as the worlds lender, and given 0 price inflation as a consolation. But with 4 decades of 0% interest, the only buyer of Japanese government bonds was the BOJ. 50% of every single Yen is Japanese government bonds. If the rates rise, that 0% yielding bond portfolio depreciates, which means the yen depreciates. The two are no longer inverted they’ve been fused together. Hyperinflation of the Yen is a mathematical certainty. This is why the Japanese are trying to change pension rules to force japans capital out of foreign holdings and into the Japanese bond market.

The plaza accords was like sucking a shotgun so you could try picking the gold fragments out of your teeth fillings after you blasted open your skull. Of course we got to sell the bits of gold from our own economic teeth, but now Reaganomics has left a big hole in our heads that we're now having to patch up after 40 years. Western economics is fake and gay because it revolves around taxation: forcing people who were having large families to pay for farming labor to now have no family and live in ghettos because the price of paying taxes and attending mandatory social services to raise a family far exceeds the profit you could ever gain by having lots of kids and a farm. This is why most farmers just went bankrupt all across the world and exported their industry to the third world. Literally sabotaging the future to participate in a pyramid scheme where everyone is poorer and has no sex or kids, but the government gets to collect much more in taxation.

It just hit Japan the hardest because their country is much smaller and they had much larger daggers stabbing them in the back when it looked like they were going to get ahead.

I had posted in the stock thread a couple of days ago, but this is the situation.

USA will do everything it can to avoid a quick unwind. Why? It would result in wealth destruction for the ruling class and the top end of the K, causing a loss of political power.

Bessent, a genuinely talented hedge fund manager (ie - who knows how this system can be directly manipulated) has been directed to keep things stable for capital. It doesn't matter if what they do is illegal or out of the norm, Trump will pardon if he succeeds.

How does one reduce valuations while maintaining the same amount of capital in the system? You could do things that force gaps, causing destruction of value in places you desire and funnelling capital to those who you know will use it in the near future, reducing the value of the market relative to the amount of cash in that system.

BOJ wants inflation, it wants a more active consumer economy but without currency devaluation. The easiest way to do this is to act in a way that forces the US to inject as much cash as possible.

So now, how are they going to get the capital for this if they don't want to devalue the USD? They sell previously 'unsellable' assets. They 'collateralize the balance sheet'. Crypto, land, patents, access rights, 100 year leases.

There is a large pool of now liquid capital as a result of that insider trading. The gap downs and volatility has put a lot of more conservative funds on the sidelines, holding cash. This created a pool of capital waiting on an opportunity.

They will sell the state to insiders, taking this cash and giving it to Japan. By buying up state assets - parks, national landmarks, access for roads, etc - the elites protect their capital and tie it to US prosperity directly instead of the USD. They stimulate a dead consumer economy in Japan, they get value out of what was unused land, and get to buy up the choicest pieces of the nation.

Who benefits?
>>
>>62573287

Who primarily benefits?

- Any BDC in the US that attaches itself to this undeveloped land that will be sold to private interests.

- Any cash rich American megacorp. Berkshire, Apple, etc. They are waiting for the phone to ring and are selling bonds because the markets see their bonds as *more stable than US Treasuries*.

- The Japanese economy receives direct stimulus, which means more cash in the pockets of consumers and inflation, which Takaichi is betting will finally get them out of deflation permanently.

- This means Japanese payment companies win. Google sees this, their filing included PayPay.

- Any sort of semi liquid asset like crypto will be drained to pay for such a bailout, this is why you are all in tears right now lmao

- Any non-american economy with an inert stock market will see it rise as people catch on to what is happening. Volume will flow to other markets as people flee the devaluing USD that is being used to prop up the Yen.

- If the yen seriously rebounds relative to the USD, the US gets to sell its yen at a profit or neutral amount, like they did in Argentina. This is their hope - that the economies they are bailing out will grow faster than their debt.

Won't work long term, but it'll be funny to watch.
Yen Yen Yen Yen. Rate my Schizo out of 10.

The trumpist illusion/hypnosis has been broken with in the US as shown by polling numbers regarding the war.

For a civil war, you need civilians against civilians en masse, fighting in some sort of cohesive manner. What you're describing does not have the fuel available.

If there is a civil war, it will be military vs populace. The nation needs the cheap labour and tax base and so would lose, and so would not fight.

What they will do is try to steal the election in a way that was within the range of expected outcomes, ensuring nothing changes about the economic system. The trumpists have attempted to rig the election all 3 of the last presidential elections to varying degrees of success, so we should expect this to continue.

The global economy right now is a system where people with sufficient capital (~1-1.5M depending on location) live a life without work and live off of market gains provided by poorer labour.

Everyone below this level provides the labour necessary for private businesses and has to be given just enough that they can dream of achieving some - unknown level of wealth so their life in the cycle is easier. They are unaware that everyone at the 1M mark and above doesn't really need to work.

Those at the bottom only provide costs to the economic system and so are being systematically eliminated through prisons, poverty, drugs. they are not needed and are treated as valueless.

I think we'll get a time of civilian to civilian conflict instead of a civil war desu. Welcome to the Global Troubles, coming 2027!

I'm not a financial advisor or expert, I'm someone who receives sexual gratification from keeping up to date with the global events and who watches geopolitics/markets YouTube obsessively. I can do this because I made my money in tech and the good years the last few years

I'm sitting largely in safety, and I feel there's been a flight to safety. Anything that makes actual physical consumer goods and distributes them is going to be just fine long term. So a decent portion of my portfolio has moved to SCHD over the last year or so, as I sold out of european defence companies last year.

SCHD was also undervalued as a fund - it has gone up substantially and may not give you the same returns it has the last year. It feels like it should be as safe as anywhere.

If you want to hedge against a fall in value of the USD but can only trade USD, you can do so by buying large stable European industrials and consumer goods, or other companies that it is clear will be needed by their militaries. Siemens, Airbus, etc.

but going somewhere like SCHD should keep you just fine. the system is made to go up long term, and so you should invest based on what you think will happen long term.

That's what I do - but I don't have a formal education in this, just access to capital.

If you want the 4D chess narrative, Trump is fucking the Rothschilds on purpose by antagonizing Iran endlessly and extending the oil blockade as long as possible for his version of the Great Reset to play out.

Alternatively, if you want the raped goyslave narrative, Trump is blockading China from oil, although China has proven it is quite resilient in backup energy sources such as coal plants, etc. The next step in the goyslave arc would be a total blockade of the Straight of Malacca.

The probability of literal hyperinflation is less than 1%.
A more probable risk (15..25%) is sustained above-target inflation and fiscal dominance. Because Japan's debt is yen-denominated and held almost entirely by domestic institutions (the BOJ, local banks, pension funds) unlike the Western world, outright sovereign default is mathematically impossible; the central bank can always create reserves to clear JGBs. The cost of this debt is borne through financial repression (domestic purchasing power erosion), not sudden hyperinflation. Therefore, most of what's being said ITT is just fear mongering and stupidity.
