Zoomers are living in a completely different circus tent from our ancestors.

Back in the prehistoric-ass days when human life expectancy was around 30, you didn’t have the luxury of going:

“Hmm, perhaps I shall spend my 20s finding myself, traveling, building my career, healing my inner child, and seeing if this relationship has long-term compatibility.”

Brother, the village would’ve already thrown a bucket of rice at you and yelled:

“CONGRATULATIONS, YOU’RE A FATHER.”

When survival itself was the main event, having a family wasn’t just some lifestyle aesthetic. Kids could mean more hands working the farm, more people protecting the household, more support in old age, and a better chance the family survives the next famine, war, disease outbreak, or whatever demonic DLC history dropped that century.

So the clown logic goes:

Shorter lifespan survival pressure earlier family formation more children family becomes the survival machine.

Now fast-forward to the modern circus.

We got medicine. Sanitation. Nutrition. Technology. Education. Contraception. Social safety nets. People routinely expect to live into their 70s, 80s, or beyond.

Suddenly the life script isn’t:

“Reproduce ASAP or the bloodline gets deleted.”

It becomes:

“Bro, I have 60 MORE YEARS. Why am I speedrunning marriage at 22?”

And that creates the chicken-and-egg problem.

People may delay family formation because life is longer and survival no longer demands immediate reproduction.

But delayed family formation itself can contribute to fewer children, because

Most of that is infant and child mortality. If you made it to puberty(13-16) you had only a slightly worse chance to making it to 70 as you do today. John Adams died at 92.

The actual reason is that unhappy single women are the backbone of Americas consumption economy, and therefore enormous resources are spent to ensure as many women are single and unhappy as possible.
