In five or ten years I can sell it for as much as I bought it for or more, adjusted for inflation. Essentially, I rent the chair for nothing. If I'd bought a cheap chair, I would've wasted hundreds of dollars. The cheap chair cost me more than the expensive one. Once you get out of the consumer mindset you can thinking about asset depreciation curves and TCO. Don't buy disposable junk, buy asset class investments. Buy Knoll and Eames furniture, Leica camera lenses, Rolex watches, classic hi-fi gear. Instead of being full of consumer goods depreciating to zero, my house becomes a storehouse of beautiful assets with lasting value which I can enjoy and liquidate any time I want.
In a demographic deflationary environment there is no asset that is "non-depreciating". Less people being born demand growth determinsitically slowing down and going negative
