most sources say you should not spend more than 30pc of your income on rent.for someone making $2k per month after taxes (slightly more than $15 an hour full time) that would be a mere $670 a month. but median rent in areas were $15 is the minimum wage are often well over $1500 a month; 'affordable' rents are never less than a thousand utilities included, and often come with significant QoL tradeoffs (crime, lack of amenities, lack of maintenance).
