The United States cannot afford to mint new pennies. The pennies are ~98% zinc and only plated with copper. For the most part, all of the machinery and infrastructure is already in place to manufacture new pennies, but we cannot afford to make fake zinc copper plated pennies.The United States stopped making 100% copper pennies in 1983, just recently we stopped making ~2% copper pennies. The United States cannot afford to plate zinc with copper to make new pennies.Our currency has been debased so much that it is cost prohibitive to interact with zinc or copper on the scale of 1/100th of a dollar. The dollar is so inflated that dealing in cents is not profitable or advised.
