It's very simple. In order for the elite's money to be worth anything, people need to want their money in exchange for their stuff. In order for people to want their money, people have to want the stuff THEY can buy with money. If everyone does LSD and "turns on, tunes in, and drops out", they will reject money and won't accept it for their goods and services, if they even participate in the economy at all. If people don't want money, the elites' pile of money becomes completely worthless. Thus, the elites, who want to have a lot of money which is worth something, instill materialism into everyone as much as possible.
