The science is pretty clear that doing the good deed and returning the wallet and money will leave you happier than taking it for yourself. So the selfish thing to do is return it to maximize your own happiness. Ironically, the unselfish, and therefore more virtuous, thing to do is keep it for yourself and suffer.
