What effect would 1 per cent interest rates have on the stonk market?
Remember how before COVID you could by a modest home in a good area for $200k and a nice mid level new car for $30k?Well, if interest rates go to 1%, we will be saying>Remember how back in 2026 you could by a modest home in a good area for $500k and a nice mid level new car for $50k?
If interest rates go that low, that means in order to make a buck the banks have to lend to anyone who will take their money. It becomes a numbers game. More people can now afford the lower rates, but are there really going to be that many people with profitable game plans to repay those loans? The natural rate of interest is basically the rate at which you can loan to all those in the economy who do have profitable game plans and will be able to repay the loan. It is all dependent upon the expected growth of the real economy. If they artificially lower interest rates to below what the natural rate of interest is, then banks would need to loan out to people who won't actually contribute any growth to the real economy. Then all their credit that is loaned out is never repaid and ends up floating out in the economy wherever they've spent it forever and it doesn't get destroyed when repaid. This means there's a lot of extra money relative to the actual goods and services being produced in the society and what that ends up looking like is high prices for everything. Soon you get a runaway spiral of inflation as people know everything is going to cost more so they demand more money from employers who then go get more loans to pay them the new higher wages and soon you have Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe levels of inflation.
