I don't get it.
People talk like robotics has reached AI levels of breakthrough. Meanwhile all these humanoid robots look ass. These are just ASIMO from 15 years ago, but with a better battery and more movement range. FUCKING ABYSMAL LEVELS OF ADVANCEMENTS IN 15 YEARS!

And notice how none of these humanoid robot videos have them doing something useful. Maybe because we don't really need humanoid robots all that much. Other form factor robots, yes - humanoids... maybe only as sexdolls.

Help me understand this mania

They are relatively cheap compared to other humanoid presence, and as a bonus it doesn't shit on the street.
Imagine a 10k robot with free AI models can replace any adult daycare jobs or even PhD professors. A human costs more than that in food per year. And raising a new human? Over ten times more expensive.
>>
>>62706225
Asimo was all scripted. The point is now humanoid robots are expected to navigate ok their own, use vision models, learn from watching, get in trouble and get out of it, thanks to VLMs, AI TTS and STT, and "reasoning" with some LLM ("hm, that didn't work. The user is expecting armpit sex, which requires raising arm" etc).
Actuators got immensely better, now they can have actual fingers, etc. Good enough for cooking. Batteries got better, chips got insanely better and so did connectivity; they can probably run all models in the robot except for the reasoning LLM, which can be seamlessly connected over 5G.
We are set for a revolution as we connect modern joints and actuators with more general-purpose AIs.
I do agree they look bad because they want to be business safe but a bit after the first commercial models, they'll probably want to make them at least decent for home use.
I will buy one when it looks like this, even if she'll cost a 5 figure.

Humanoid robots will be more transformative than LLM AI by far. For most people, AI is just a glorified search engine. Robots will be part of daily life. And they will help to decentralize AI, which defuses much of the risk.
>>
For the vast majority of robot jobs, a specialized shape will be better. We really dont need them to be humanoid form.

Why make it humanoid at all? Who not give it 15 arms and wheels for legs?

First, because the constructed world is built for human shape. A humanoid robot can step off the assembly line and right into homes, vehicles, stores, offices, etc. Second, the humanoid shape is familiar. Familiar is comforting and more easily accepted. Third, I want my sex robot to resemble a woman, not a spider.
>>
>>62706534
They can't run the large model needed to "reason" and plan; I think they'll be centralised wirelessly (sadly)

LLM doesn't reason. It is a hyperfast parrot with a gigantic dataset. It can imitate reason. In the same way it can imitate emotions but cannot actually HAVE or understand emotions since it lacks body sensations that are the root of emotions.

That having been said, an independent robot can still consult a centralized AI just as independent humans do.
>>
>>62706225
One day you'll hear Apple claim they have to increase iPhone prices because of "humanoid robot inflation." They'll find any excuse to charge $2,500 for a phone.
>>
>>62706721
Ofc hence my quotes around "reason". Reasoning in LLMs is just predicting how a smart person would write down a reasoning without actually reasoning; it may be right or wrong. It will never discover new physics, prove Riemann's hypothesis, etc. And of course it will never ever be AGI, anybody saying AGI is being dishonest.
>>
>>62706721
About 90% of jobs—or at least 90% of everyday tasks—require zero actual reasoning and can be handled entirely by AI. Humans will only be needed to give high-level direction and light planning. AI productivity blows humans out of the water, especially since AI can process everything simultaneously while humans can barely hold 3 to 6 thoughts in their head. As for everyone worrying about AGI: honestly, I don't see real intelligence from most human beings either

Japan is making some good ones, I want a SENKO-SAN model (picrel) to help me clean my house and make me dinner, I'd love her so much and probably rope if she broke down.

China has also developed a dog bot called THE GNASHER, you can program it to go for jeets!

They better be careful now. Pattern recognition is racist and antisemite.
>>62707180
It's less appealing once they make them anime-like, and it has to be human-sized because you want it in your home, to fit in your car if you need to carry it, to reach the same places you reach when cleaning, etc.

No, they will be data-center controlled machines. They will be extensions of big tech into your physical reality.

Sounds like you need to watch the Chinese robot olympics. The Chinese creating robot sports to incentivize development means they're probably going to crush the west in robotics over the next 5-10 years
>>
>>62711661
fwiw I asked chatgpt how powerful a 1 cubic foot AI server could be, and it's definitely powerful enough if you have access to cutting edge chips and no budget restraints. The problem is it estimates it would run around 30 kilowatts which is impossible to cool unless you want your waifu tethered to an AC unit with tubes of coolant.
>>
>>62706225
>Maybe because we don't really need humanoid robots all that much.
wrong
humanoid robots doing menial labor are going to be what solves the global demographic crisis. The average age of a human on earth has NEVER BEEN HIGHER. There are more old people than ever before. Back in the day, this wasn't a major problem, as there were more than enough young people to be paid caretakers. Today? We can't import enough 3rd worlders to staff oldfolks homes here in America. Humanoid robots capable of doing menial tasks around the house will keep hundreds of millions of people out of overpriced understaffed retirement homes. That's why China is going so hard on this tech.
>>
>>62706225
It's not what they're doing now that matters. These are the first steps towards cybernetics and ultimately full body replacement.

Also robots that pass as human. All the benefits of being human with none of the health problems and aging.
>>
>>62706225
They are being trained to do useful things by legions of wagies wearing VR helmets working at super slow pace doing simple menial tasks. You need high quality training data for AI. Once they have some they can start creating simulated training data and it will speed up the process.
>>
I don't understand why anyone would want a humanoid robot around their house, especially with a wifi connection since (((someone))) will figure out how to hack into it and have it murder you and your family. Obvious trap desu and I'm not falling for it. Anyone who wants a sexbot better keep that shid airgapped or one day it might just clamp off your cock fr.
>>
>>62714356
They WILL try to make robots (((Safe and Responsible))) meaning they're never used against their interests (i.e. in an antisemitic way) and the glowniggers will continue to watch you wank off and, in this case, fuck, from your toaster or from your TV or from your 2B.
