Canada has an upwards of 2 million foreign workers and students in the country right now. There might still be a few people illegally here and there but it is really hard to work here for a good wage without a status. This isn't the US where a mexican can hop the border and work at a gas station for cash. You need a social insurance number to get hired anywhere. Everybody usually leaves on their own when their permit expires because theres not much sense in living here if you are not working, with Canada's exorbitant rent and grocery prices. No new foreign students (the primary source of temporary residents) are coming into the country. I believe only like 20K students came to Canada till July, when the government has a cap of 130K. For comparison, hundreds of thousands of students were coming into Canada before 2024, paying tuition, rent, and taxes. Contributing to the economy. Most are either young (below 25) or hold at least a master's degree from their home country. Of course, Trump wants fewer people coming into Canada because Canada is fucked otherwise. Millions of work permits are expiring this year and the next. What happens when upwards of a million young working population leave a country of 30 million? Many provinces have cut down on student benefits and aid and a lot of colleges have closed because international students aren't coming in and paying 4 times the tuition (I am not exaggerating) a domestic student pays. After colleges, the economy is next when those students turned workers are forced to leave.For any Canadians reading this, This is a warning. to pull out of the Canadian economy and turn your CAD investments into USD.

The problem is I haven't been able to find a good stock or an etf which translates my thesis well. The Canadian economy is dominated by the Big 5 Banks, so any market etfs are naturally tilted towards the finance sector. The banks are too big to fail and they won't be affected that much even if the economy is doing bad. And I am not too sure about the time period either, maybe everything will start going south next year or maybe in early 2028. So, I am writing this here so someone smarter than me can take advantage of this. Feel free to look at the numbers on your own, or try to find holes in my logic. I am pretty confident about all this.
I like Canada and try to visit when I can. My wife is likely eligible for Canadian citizenship but true to her Quebecois roots she is too lazy to file for it. In Shartmerica we remain.
