What's the point of buying bonds? They never protect you, in fact they have so many fucking risks: inflation, rates, defaults, currency, liquidity, maturity, opportunity cost.
If you want comfy and secure just buy KO and stuff like that

well entire economic theories are based on the idea of bonds being the "risk-free-rate" that is used to price options and other financial products.
Maybe he wouldnt have lost so hard if he bought 3 month bonds on a rolling basis rather than 10 year bonds
Also the reverse scenario can occur where if you have the intelligence to recognize that bonds were going to rise in value, he might have doubled his money in 5 years, rather than lost half his money - but he didn't predict the markets wisely.
