They do actually use the money, but just a couple % every year to make sure it keeps growing. Also the point of the money isn't only the wealth necessarily, its their "pledge" to neoliberalism since most of the money is invested outside of Norway. Sovereign wealth like this could make some countries a little inward looking and self-centered, but they purposefully tied their money to other countries to keep their prosperity tied to other countries' success so that they have to care about the outside world.A lot of European countries have similar amounts of wealth, but in gold and it's a lot more clandestine and can't be used freely. Everyone who could, hoarded gold during the cold war era to finance WW3, which they believed was just around the corner, and gold has gained a lot of value since. During WW2, most countries were so ill prepared they had to ask their own citizens to donate their their family heirlooms, wedding rings etc. to help finance the war. Gathering that gold in advance without having to erode morale during war-time is very sensible. Take any country's GDP around the 50's, times it by a couple years and that's how much gold they were trying to gather during this time, whether they managed that is up to debate. This is also kind of the origin of the legends of Nazi gold that inspired books and movies. There's just a lot of gold missing in Europe from after WW2. Some want it to be a grand conspiracy that it's all stashed somewhere dumb like the vatican, instead of the occupied countries just taking it for themselves to hold as an emergency fund. I'm saying all this because that gold is worth trillions and isn't part of the marketcap since it's been immobile for 80 years.

we do, but we have a cap at 3% every year. Last years it has been around 2.7% honestly if agi and all that happens I think Norway could be one of the few countries that can have some sort of UBI. We have such big amount of shares in the world economy that we can just live of dividends lol
