with that coldwallet or whatever bitcoin hack where a bunch of people got their bitcoin stolen

how is the coldwallet company not responsible for the stolen bitcoin?

It would be like with a bank
>you want to make a withdrawal?
>sorry, yesterday a thief had broken into the bank and there was a vulnerability with the vault lock and he cracked it, and stole all your money
>we're terribly sorry
>you want your money back? we understand, and we would like to give you your money but it was stolen. it's gone
>if you would like, we could make a new account for and you could make a deposit for your new journey of starting over

in a functioning society, yes, they would be liable. the exploit was possible because of shitty code they pushed. whether they have the funds to reimburse everyone is a different story
