This is almost all essential static loads. refrigerator(s), freezer(s), 2x weekly laundry, a few hours of TV during the evenings and one 20 min combined shower together.

I think my wife might be turning the tv on during the day. we have an electric dryer. I suggested switching to a clothes line for drying laundry and she told me "only if you're going to hang and bring it in."

Its just the two of us and our house is only 140sqm. I mean, we do have a 37sqm basement, but i'm not sure if that even matters.

I think you’ve hit the point of diminishing returns and any further savings will be not worth the cost

I’m pretty sure clothes line drying isn’t worth either as you spend an hour easily vs a couple dollars

Scrounging for pennies will never make you rich. Its not the effort involved.
You could make your life suck to save 200$ a year, but as you approach retirement age the net effect will be if you want to retire 1 month earlier or not. Its a lot of wasted time for nothing.

If you need money this bad, I'm sure you can find better ways. Like working a few saturdays for cash jobs.

I was thinking along these lines a few months ago. I can save 400$ with a different credit card benefits, 300$ with workplace benefits, 500$ with car insurance .... and after all that shit it makes basically no difference to my retirement timeline. Focusing on the small cookies when there are big things like why don't I just get a new job that pays 20k more, and all this penny pinching means nothing but making my life harder for no reason.

Better Job > Side Hustling for cash on the weekends > Penny Pinching

Solar panel and battery, get a small calculator sized one as clearly Finland has never discovered the benefits of an A/C. In the small of a space I bet it gets hot and uncomfy. Needs a crisp 67 degree farnheit. So get a A/C is your best bet is what I am saying, so that you increase your plebeian bill to a level the panel and battery might be worth it.

I'm red in the face right now. You know exactly what you need to do to pay less for that thing you measured. You looked real close at every degree and even found the sharpest ones. You did a great job. It's all about the money, plane and simple. The work is done, the barrier is crossed, and it costs you more than you need to pay to break it again. More than you have I mean. More than you borrowed I mean. More than I gave you I mean. More than there even is. That'll shut her up.

If the goal is just to get the monthly electric bill as low as possible you should purchase rooftop solar panels. Yeah they’ll never pay themselves back in a polar climate but negative ROI is clearly not a concern given the costs of all your other electricity saving measures.
Also, take a thermal detector and scan the house for any missing insulation/broken window seals/etc. Uou could save a pretty penny on heat if it turns out there’s a cold spot in the house.
>>
>>62815646
Obvious JELD shill. You need thick, hard, custom, live edge wood doors. With trim. Quadtillion 6 rule: 6" depth, 6' height, 66" wide. If you don't get this door global warming will boil bats out of hell slam thru and nab your juuls. It's a cookie really. You don't value your hobbyhole at all if you don't keep shadows out and let only big and talls in.

It’s that simple anon. Funnel that into an Air Conditioning Apparatus, that humans use. This appliance technology allowed the creation of what the simpletons refer to as hell, the damned babies. But really, Satan would be comfortable in a goonest of holes like SeGOON Texas, next to New Braunfels. Of course the Germs would spawn a portal of hell.

Damn that's pretty cheap imo. I paid $650 a month during the summer here in new jersey in a relatively tiny 620sqft house. I'm not poor and I refuse to cut back on anything but it was still pretty frustrating.

It still blows my mind that like most Americans aren't just using solar power. It's been out for while and it's dirt cheap to buy panels and entirely energy unlike boomer energy. Like it's 2026, unless you live in Alaska or or something, it makes no sense at all.
>>
my energy answer would be like 150k in the stock market that would pay my energy bills, another 150k for property tax, another 150k for food, car insurance, inspection...

>>62814485
how do you make hot water ? if its a instant water heater there's not too much to optimize. if you have a electric boiler you could insulate it more since they are badly insulated (door size restriction) and you lose about 1/3 to 1/2 of heat through that if it is oversized. you could also replace it with a heat pump based boiler but the upfront cost is substantial if not done yourself (and you should still but more insulation on).
However as this guy >>62814497 pointed out, your electricity bill isn't outragiously high and you won't save much more going forward. better to invest in solar power and maximize self use of that power.

also i would personall put the water heater to at least 55°C unless you use the full amount every day because of legionella, but you do you.

I hate to let you down, anon, but my wife thrives in our lifestyle. I work & earn, she cleans, cooks, gardens, raises & butcheres livestock, all at her own pace, in a custom designed new construction house that we had built to fit our specs and needs. i pay the bills & crown's ransom, she tends the home, reads, relaxes in her clawfoot then greets me with dinner, adoration and appreciation when I come home to a well run and maintained homestead.

this is the way we were meant to live... before the working class became slaves supporting the welfare system for 3rd world leeches.
>>

The working class has been slaves since civilization was created so I dont know where you got the idea that anything has changed. Trying to save $10 on your electric bill is schizo, mentally ill behavior.

Fortunately the intelligent people like myself know how to make money while you stress out over pennies.

Unless it's subsidized or your utility has silly buyback rates it doesn't make sense. Electricity is pretty cheap in most parts of the country. The break even time on a solar panel investment can be 10+ years (never when you consider opportunity cost)
>>
>>62817375
You dont have any of these things if you're trying to save $50
>>
>>62814485
I have never seen an electric bill this low. I use 4x the amount of electricity you do. My delivery charge alone would be higher than your entire bill. Find somewhere else to save or make money you penny pinching pleb.
>>
>>62815782
It's not dirt cheap
Solar is heavily dependent on where you put them. You need them to face south most of the time. So the best place for most americans is on the roof. If the roof doesn't face south they're not going to make good electric. If the panels cost $15k to install, and you only end up saving $100/month + it adds little to no value to the home for resale, nobody bothers.
>>
>>62814485
It looks like most of your bill is service fees that will get added even no matter how much electricity you cut. 48 is nothing, find something else to budget. I got a pretty expensive solar system and I was still paying like 160 the last 4 months due to a/c.
>>
>>62818026
I got solar right before the tax credit ended. I think I spent like 37k on it, and got like 11k back in a refund. They estimate it will take 8 years to pay itself off, and I'm happy with it because I have roommates and I can't control their electric usage and order them to conserve during peak hours.

What made me the maddest is that they installed the powerwall battery outside and during the summer it literally gets so hot the battery doesn't work. They fucked me on that, I'm tempted to pay another company to move it into the garage or something.
>>
>>62818072
The tax credit is also DOA now cause the republicans hate the idea of americans being independent from anything.
>>
>>62814485
Lol Americans were laughing at Britain for being pro renewables. I don't even pay any electric bills since I have solar panels and a battery.
>>
>>62818137
Yeah, I don't get it.

In america there are a lot of predatory people that will lease solar panels with really horrible contract.s and idiots get suckered into them. Then that gives solar a bad name. And not every home is suited for them, but I'm in arizona and literally 70% of home should fucking have solar panels.

At least eventually we'll get better battery technology like the sodium batteries. that way it may be worth having a battery on most homes even without solar panels, then most homes would have emergency backup, and be able to charge from the grid during cheap electricity hours.
>>
>>62818137
>Americans were laughing at Britain
It's not hard to do that.
>>
no drier or washing machine, do it all by hand like us 3rd worlders.
>>
>>62818204
I'm guessing you are being facetious, but in reality, it only costs like 50 cents to dry a load of clothes. Maybe more if you live in an expensive area and run it during peak hours.

At a certain point you have to value an hour of your free time over 50 cents.

Now, I do think sun drying clothes can have a couple of merits, like if you have stinky workout clothes that even the washer can't deodorize, the sun may help. But you are also sun bleaching your clothes as well.
>>
>>62814677
Nice picture of your wife.
>>
>>62816174
>80gal heat-pump water heater
so probably oversized. yeah, more insulation could help, but seriously, your electricity use is so low and the price you pay per kWh is so low, i'd really consider other ways to save/make money, since you might stave off 1-3 percent per year while the expenditure (including time) is most certainly much higher. if you had to pay like europoors ($0.4 or more per kWh) you certainly could keep on optimizing but you're running out of ROI at this point
>>
The biggest draw to your power is going to be either washing machines or your air conditioning, or your fridge/freezer not the tv or the light bulbs, anything that uses a motor.
>>
>>62814485
I think you should look at other things to save money... Your style of writing tells me you are too autistic to do that though.
>>
>>62816174
>>62818461
oh and a washing machine with hot and cold water support, since your boiler is more efficient, but THAT only gives ROI once your old machine goes out.
>>

total investment in our system, after rebates was ~$11,500. that covered EVERYTHING; panels, inverter, batteries, concrete, posts, frames, mount rails, wiring, conduit, trenching, cable, the *entire building* the batteries/inverter is housed in, and insulation. DIY installed by me, with some help from my 81 year old (at the time) dad.
ROI ESTIMATE: 8 YEARS. that doesn't even address all the times The Grid power goes out and we are totally unaffected. since we are so far out on the grid service it goes out often, a few times it has been down for over 18 hours.

>>62817862
yeah, sure... because a guy who watches what and where he spends surely cant be financially sound, right? only a dysfunctional moron actually tracks their spending and tries to budget and improve on it. also: see new build, rural house in photos above, livestock and wife milking.

>sodium batteries are junk
certainly the current generation
>wife and I take Looooong showers
yeah still at 80 gallons i'd put more insulation on the boiler. if it's somewhere ugly you can just wrap some glaswool or old blankets around it and wrap it in kitchen foil. also consider a thermosiphon/heat trap, that'll save you 30-50% of heat energy on the boiler (both combined) and probably give a good ROI (3-8 years).
unless you use a circulating pump, then all of this is useless, since you're losing half your heat that way already.
>>

17m3 cut, bucked & stacked. 98 million BTUs. better than free heat; I got paid $2000 to cut it down, log and load it. I was given a brand new MS271 Stihl chainsaw to keep and supplied with the 1st 3.25L of fuel, which was sufficient to cut down and process 11m3 of it. I did spend ~$100 to rent a splitter and used 16 hours of my own time (unpaid) to split and stack it. this will reduce our heating bill to essentially $Ø this year and next. we we will still use some ductless mini-split heat in the milder times, but thats "free" as well.

I think i can get our bill under $35.
