The biggest example is Polygon. It began in 2017 as Matic Network, founded in Mumbai by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun (with Serbian co-founder Mihailo Bjelic). It was rebranded as Polygon in 2021, and its MATIC token became one of the top altcoins by market cap. In 2024 MATIC was migrated to a new token called POL. The team has since become more globally distributed, but its Indian origin is widely recognised.

Smaller examples are exchange tokens, such as WRX, launched around 2019 by the Indian exchange WazirX. These are tied to one platform rather than being independent blockchains.

India’s own state-backed digital currency, the digital rupee (e₹), is a central bank digital currency rather than an altcoin. It’s issued by the Reserve Bank of India and isn’t a decentralised crypto asset.
