If you like old Beck (you utterly ancient mummy), you'd probably like Carl Stephenson's project Forest For the Trees since he's the sonic launchpad that got Beck his start in the first place. In the early 90s, Beck was a struggling anti-folk musician playing acoustic gigs in LA coffeehouses. Carl Stephenson was working as a producer and sampler for the rap label Rap-A-Lot Records and Tom Rothrock's indie label, Bong Load Custom Records.Tom introduced Beck to Carl, thinking their weird, disparate styles might click. They sat down in Carl's living room in 91, and magic happened:Carl laid down a hip-hop drum loop and sampled a guitar riff from a Dr. John song. Beck started playing a slide guitar part over it.Beck felt his rapping on the verses was terrible and famously said a pretty self deprecating line which Carl immediately recognised as a goldmine, hooked up the microphone, had Beck alter it a bit, and recorded it.Carl produced, engineered, co-wrote, and played instruments on the track. That line? "I'm such a loser with hip-hop so just kill me" which morphed into a more well-known line (which you paraphrased) and that song, of course, was "Loser".When it dropped on Bong Load in 93 (and blew up globally in '94), it completely revolutionized the alt-rock landscape. Carl also co-produced and co-wrote several other tracks on Beck's major-label debut album, Mellow Gold, including "Mutherfuker" and "Steal My Body Home."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3x2hRG7D3A
