Where have all the baskets gone? There is ONE grocery near me which still offers baskets. It drives me bonkers. Has anyone else noticed the Great Basket Decline of the mid 2020s? Who is responsible for removing baskets from grocery stores and what do they have to gain from it?
>>
>>22033560
Most places around me replaced baskets with the small cuck carts (which I refuse to use)
>>
>>22033568
why?
>>
>>22033574
I am not sure. I was a basket man myself. Very interesting observation.
>>
>>22033560
i don't have this issue as i live in america and not the liberal shithole to the north.
>>
>>22033574
because he's gay
>>
>>22033568
Same but I am baffled why they did so. If anything it's probably more expensive.
>>22033574
Worst of both worlds. Confined to using a cart thereby impeded by other shoppers, but I rarely need more than a basket of space.
>>22033577
I have seen this is NE US. Where do you live with such unfettered basket access?
>>
>>22033560
For awhile one of my stores was out of baskets. I asked someone and the response was that people were just stealing them until they ran out.
>>
>>22033560
I don't even know if any grocery stores where I live have them because I would have no use for them. I do see them at ace hardware though.
>>
>>22033560
They stopped because people kept stealing them, and they cost like $20 a piece.
>>
>>22033601
>>22033589
why the fuck would anybody steal a shopping basket
>>

>>
>>22033560
I live in the Central Valley of Commiefornia. The baskets are also everywhere and plentiful. The walmart near me has like 3 stacks as tall as I am every time I walk in. Even the smaller grocery stores like R-N have them.
>>
Tweakers steal them. They're worth about $250 usd each, but I doubt there's someone out there fencing them. Homeless people take them for hauling junk, recyclables, and using them as campfire grills.
>>
>>22033560
i haven't used carts/baskets in a decade. bring your own bags.
>>
I can actually answer that! Anecdotally!
I was at the supermarket this morning for milk and I was heading in, a guy was heading out to his car with a basket. People are stealing them because unlike carts/trolleys, they're not magnetically protected.
People really will take anything that's not bolted down.
>>
ITT: people don't know the difference between a basket and a cart because they're retards.
>>
>>22033560
My schizo theory is getting rid of handbaskets for more carts is because having a bigger basket subconsciously makes you buy more stuff because you have the room for it.

I imagine another reason OP is the rise of BYO Shopping Tote Bags as plastic ones are being phased out supplanting their function.
>>

They're used interchangeably in the US to mean the same thing, don't know why. I didn't even know until I worked at a store some years back.

>>22033568
nah the cuck carts are goated. L take.
>>
>>22033713
Nonsense. Cart is US terminology, trolley is UK. A basket is a basket. A cart is a cart. I've lived in the US the past 26 years straight and not once have I ever encountered a single person who said "basket" and meant "cart".
Buggy? Sure.
Basket? Never.
>>
>>22033713
No they're not anon
>>
>>22033713
why do so many people here LARP as americans? it's so weird.
>>
>>22033739
Northeast US. And the cuck carts are good if you need a cart. If you just need a basket, though, they can't be considered a replacement.
>>
>>22033762
I always end up buying more stuff than I thought I would so baskets are almost always a no-go for me.
>>
>>22033756

Nobody does, except in your dreams.

I also hate the cuck cart. Basket are alpha as fuck, you can wiz past all the boomers who block the way just so people can say excuse me and have an excuse to talk to them. Plus basket implies you live alone, and aren't fat (you have to be in shape to properly wield one). It is a great feeling watching the wagie chicks at the cashier drip at my patrician selection of healthy groceries. Fellow shoppers stand in awe at my efficiency getting in and out, questioning why their shit isn't as together as mine, rethinking their whole lives.

The Asian market here has pic related instead of the cuck carts. They don't allow them out in the parking lot.

You kinda went off the rails there but I agree with the general sentiment.
>>
>>22033830
there's nothing special about this website that makes it immune to someone pretending to be something they're not. in fact, this is the easiest place in the world to pretend to be someone else since there are no accounts and everyone is completely anonymous.
>Twitter is NOT 4chan
every other post here is an x (formerly twitter) or reddit screenshot. the direction of travel is no longer from 4chan to other websites, but the other way around.

demonstrably not true.

they stopped because of human psychology. people are more likely to overspend if they have plenty of space in the cart. simple as.
>>
>>22033846
No anon, you don't understand my frustration. People think I zone out a lot, but I just finish my tasks quickly and efficiently and watch everyone else fumble around with something I could have done in half the time. They even go so far as to imply I'm slow and I'm not following, when I'm leading and already at the end.
>>
>>22033889
I have also noticed many people stop mid-way through most of their tasks and look around at everyone else and give a nervous laugh and spend 10 minutes talking about how difficult a 2 minute task is. It's insane to me.

Small supermarkets still use baskets because they are too small for people to use carts But yeah in big supermarkets there are no baskets anymore. Personally I prefer carts, they are more comfortable to move around because you are moving your products with wheels and not carrying them by yourself.

Maybe it depends on the area you're in. Kroger and Meijer here both have baskets and they're frequently used in both places. I used one just a few hours ago.
>>
baskets disappeared around my local around the start of big coof but i think the real answer why they stayed gone is nobody wanted to put them back

i still see them get used for piling up marked down discount trash on chairs
>>
>>22033574
The slower foot traffic means more time in the store which means more shopping. baskets get heavy and fill quickly so it limits the customers potential purchases. Baskets left around by shoppers are a liability for tripping hazards.

That's not a schizo theory, dumbass. It's the literal historical, well-documented, and frequently storied reason why shopping carts became the norm. Guy noticed people stopped shopping when their baskets were full. So he invented shopping carts.

>>
>>22033560
Yeah.
Here we used to have regular baskets, then they introduced larger baskets with wheels on for the elderly, mentally disabled and women, now regular baskets are disappearing as the grocery Jew wants men to submit to the humiliation ritual that is the roly-poly baskiewaskie.

do you know how fucking narrow the profit margins are for grocery stores?
>>
>>22033574
Because he's a dumb fucking schizo that thinks cart sizes somehow have to do with him being a virgin loner, a massive fat fuck OR both.
>>
whoever put the hand sanitizer near these things needs to be shot every time i go into the store since covid there is some retard doing a full wipedown and is somehow blocking every avenue to getting my own cart and getting my shopping done
>>
>>22035176
Not as narrow as people think because retards like most of this board don't shop sales. When shit isn't on sale, supermarkets make fantastic profit.

Not him, but Walmart is a department store/hypermarket. While it makes 60% of its revenue from grocery sales, the profit margins from that revenue is razor thin and most of the profit they generate comes from private non-food product brands, general services like pharmacy/vehicles, and memberships (which is bundled with sams club).
That anon is specifically speaking about typical grocery stores like Kroger, Safeway, Publix, Giant, Harris Teeter ect...
>>22035204
They really don't. Even stuff on sale is done to deal with surplus, get rid of non-perishables sooner, and/or create loss leaders. If you do nothing but buy on sales, you're not making the store any money, rather they're losing it.
t. buys everything on sale outside of milk/eggs and plans long term shops to stock up.

This is one of my pet peeves. Where I live all the grocery stores are very protective about their baskets and asking to borrow one after checkout means either being treated like a criminal or a freak. They might as well not have them at all at this point.

Typically I ride my bike to the store in my neighborhood and just buy 1-2 days worth of food, and lock my bike to a railing about 8ft from the front door, so it would be convenient to use a basket to transfer stuff from checkout to my bike (and then return basket to the stack of baskets that's a few steps away) rather than waste an extra plastic or paper bag... but I've learned that asking politely, with or without an explanation, is typically treated as a confrontation or a request to violate one a sacred rule. Or worse, if the cashier is cool and understands the request, there's a good chance you'll get confronted by the store's front end manager for taking it anyways...

So in practice it's best to simply take a shopping cart for EVERY trip, even if only getting a handful of things. Nobody cares if you push a shopping cart out the door, but carrying a basket out the same door is beyond the pale.
>>
>>22033844
in my country pretty much every supermarket has those trolley baskets
>>
OP....thats actually kinda wild you noticed that and now that you mention it...yeah you are correct, I have noticed. I imagine covid made a major impact on it. I dont even bother looking for one if i have to grab a few items. Now i get to look like a idiot walking around cradling 4 items in my arms. Its fuckin stupid. Ya know...now that i'm really thinking about it I'm about to just grab/ask for a paper plastic bag and put all my groceries in that. Itll probably look suspicious as fuck but i;ll be able to explain myself and even talk to mangment. Fuck it i'm gonna prank call a grocery store right now and get down to the bottom of this fucked up issue.
>>
>>22035292
Nope. It's still not nearly as narrow as they say. Most of their profit comes from high margin cash cows. This is where your $23 specialty coffees, $16/oz organic beauty products, pharmacy items, bakery goods, inflated store brand stuff, sandwiches and prepared rotisserie chickens come in. The margins on these items are ridiculous and more than compensate for anything lost on dairy and loss-leaders.
Retards too lazy or dumb to shop sales and who don't know how to cook are the supermarket's bread and butter. Convenience drives profits. Grocery stores actively count on "intermittent shoppers" IE the schmucks who walk in, grab whatever catches their eye, and pay premium prices for name brands, pre-cut veggies or overpriced tofu (fuck you, Safeway; Aldi and Lidl sell organic tofu for less than half the price you do, you cunts).
If everyone only shopped the loss-leaders and sales and used coupons, the supermarket wouldn't go out of business because even deal-hunters buy the occasional cake or sandwich.
ffs, the Brooklyn ShopRite must sell $75 million annually or so. Rent for a 90k sqft in that area is roughly $5.4m per year. Utilities, about $1.5m. And payroll another $9m.
All that's left is insurance and purchasing. And I doubt the two are over $60m combined per year. And most of it is coming from the prepared foods and salad bar, not the dry aisles, dairy or produce. $12.99/lb for chopped lettuce and bitches can't help but trip over themselves to get some. It's ridiculous. Cakes? 50ยข worth of flour and $2 worth of eggs and butter and they sell that shit for $40.
Yeah, profits on Cheetos and similar shit are roughly 3% but that's not how a supermarket makes its money. And let's not forget: they make extra $$$ as data brokers.
>>
>>22035384
At first I wasn't sure if it was a regional thing as I moved a couple years ago but I'm glad others have had the same experience so at least I'm not crazy. It's been pissing me off for years and I actually specifically patronize the one grocery which still has baskets. I tend to side with conspiracychad anons >>22033704 >>22033888 vs simpleton theftcels >>22033669 >>22033690 but either way it's fucking annoying. I also hate looking retarded when trying to hold more than like 4 items but it's still better than taking LITERALLY 2-3x the time by pushing around a cart.
