Sign languages are generally similar because they're visual rather than auditory. It's why you can recognise a drawing or sculpture of a cat regardless of what culture it came from but won't recognise the word. So while my country's sign for DOOR looks different from the ASL sign, the concept works the same way and the two are understandable to one another despite not being similar in any of the morphemes that make a sign other than motion. The hand shape, sign location and palm orientation are all different but the motion of both signs is enough to "get" what the sign is from context. Does that make sense?
