Uhh... is lentil soup supposed to end up as a formless mush? I don't think I've had actual gruel before. Tastes pretty good though.

It would probably be more appetizing if you made a smooth puree or set aside some non-mashed lentils for texture.
>>
>>22037021
I didn't even try to mash them, they just sort of fell apart after a while.
>>
depends on the type of lentil, yellow falls apart easily, brown stays intact, but soup ends up with an ugly color

you can always add more broth or water

This is correct. The point of yellow lentils is their quick cooking time and they break down into a mush which is best served with rice. Other lentils retain their shape and are better suited to soups. Look up French and Mediterranean country lentil soups.

well you used split red lentils, anon senpai. try whole green, brown or laird lentils next time ;)

You are correct I guess I used the wrong type of lentil. Oh well, it's still nourishment, just with the consistency of baby food. Will take advice into consideration for next time, thanks anons.
>>
depends how far you want to take them

a lot of lentil dishes call for lentils to basically become creamy, almost custard like

i think some lentils are much more hardy, they won't totally disintegrate but if you continue to cook them past the point of being tender they will break up

treat them like potato, if you keep boiling potatoes they become mush

>supposed to
up to you
when i do lentils or beans i cook the fuck out of them, use the blender and then push it through a strainer for a smooth thick sauce
fucking hate bits and pieces
>>
>>22037050
you cooked them too long. even whole brown lentils will turn into baby food if you cook them for 5 minutes too long. they aren't like beans.
>>
>>22038349
Imagine having a child's view of food and believing you're right.
>>
>>22038353
You can get beans to disintegrate if you dehusk them, after a long (ex. overnight) soak in bicarb water, before cooking them. Really fucking tedious tho.

They only reason I'm not fat is because I refuse to eat animal feed like you.
Let me shake the trough for you so you can get excited, piggy.
>>
Try French green lentils, they're like brown lentils but hold their shape even better. I don't bother buying anything else.
