anyone here tried surstromming? is it that bad or have people overdramatised it for internet views?
>>
>>22039633
If that ugly British guy couldn’t stomach it even after trying to eat it the traditional way then I believe it really is just that foul.
>>
>>22039633
>anyone here tried surstromming?
Quick answer to that is NO !

Nobody on /ck/ has ever tried it, there will be a few that pretend they have (usually Americans) but even in Sweden it's a niche thing amongst small groups.
>>
>>22039642
Thread about a Swedish, first post is about the British.
>M-m-must mention the British
>C-c-can't stop thinking about the British
>H- h-have to talk about the British
You guys must be seriously obsessed.
>>
surstromming is eaten in such small amounts that's it's basically a condiment. you scrape the meat off 2 of the little fish and eat the spoonful of meat with potatoes on a huge piece of bread.
>>
>>22039633
I actually tried to try it once but I ended up getting a (presumably) expired can of surtromming and as it turns out, if you let it sit for too long, the fish can end up fully dissolving. when I opened it up under some running water it was just an greyish liquid and a fish skeleton. it smelled pretty bad but it was completely tolerable. didn't end up eating any for obvious reasons.
>>
>>22039633
I tried it. Fillets, not whole fish. Flat bread, potato, sour cream, onions, opened the chilled can under water. Still not very good. Salty but the texture is abhorrent. It's extremely mushy. The smell wasn't actually immediately awful, but god, it just stinks up all of your insides for hours afterwards. I get why they load up on onions because you can kind of convince yourself that you have nightmarishly awful onion breath. It's kind of like the head-filling effect of truffle oil, with the smell of rotting garbage.
The thing I have never heard anyone talk about online is what it does to your pee afterwards. Because that is probably the most vile thing I have ever smelled in my life.
>>
>>22039741
>I tried it.
No you haven't . . .you are telling lies, you have just done a google search on the traditional way of eating it and made up a story.

Why do people do this?
>>
>>22039633
Once landed ar a guys home and his father brought a can of it. The stench was horrible. We were like 40 people and only 3 tried it. They said the taste wasn't even that bad and similar to other canned fish but again the smell was so horrid that i had it in my nose for hours even with like 10 m distance.
>>
Most people on this board act like they're gonna vomit at the idea of aged cheese. Of course the average person retches and cries when surstromming is mentioned.
>>
>>22039743
Because they're jealous cunts
>>
>>22039743
The only way to solve this is to have a thread of someone trying it with pictures. This assignment is easier to europoors than ameripoors.
>>
>>22039633
Anyone have the webm of the guy pouring surstromming juice under a mascot?
>>
>>22039798
I agree.
It's most likely that Americans lie about trying it than Euros though, so that would be the most telling.
>>
>>22039818
Unless the Yuro is Sweedish they are porbably lying too since surstromming is a niche even in its country of origin. Doubt you even see it in the supermarkets in Stockholm.
>>
>>22039831
I can bet you 10 to 1 that the people who pretend they have tried it are American and not Euros.

Americans lie for a pastime and have a FOMO (fear of missing out) about anything.
> Doubt you even see it in the supermarkets in Stockholm.
I have already mention this here >>22039675
> even in Sweden it's a niche thing amongst small groups.

Just like jellied eels in Britain 99.9% of Brits have never had them.
>>
>>22039842
Just out of curiosity where are you from?
>>
>>22039862
India why?
>>
>>22039684
Why are Britbongs overly sensitive? Of course you idiots get shit on a lot because you are the ones making most of the threads.
>>
>>22039633
Yes, and while it does not smell pleasant it is definitely overdramatized
>>
>>22039743
since you seem to have tried it for real, can you tell us about your experience?

Stop acting edgy, fringe fish is gross.
THE END!

Swede here, tried it once. It wasn't as bad as people make it out to be but one bite was all it took for me to burp throughout the rest of the day and the taste returned each time

>I actually tried to try it once but I ended up getting a (presumably) expired can of surtromming and as it turns out, if you let it sit for too long, the fish can end up fully dissolving.
Yeah, it's raw fish and after canning it's not pasteurized. It needs to be kept refrigerated so obviously people getting it shipped from overseas with no kind of cooling are going to have problems with it.

I've never tried it but I assume it's not too different from how fish sauce tastes. Some people like it when used a bit sparingly but you wouldn't want a whole mouthful of straight fish sauce.
>>
I tried it but don't remember the details. All I remember is being drunk and trying some and being underwhelmed. I think we didn't finish the can and just threw it in the bushes and the smell was mostly gone in the morning.
>>
Eat it every year, its tradition where i come from in Sweden. In that area quite a lot of people eat it but elsewhere in Sweden you can get a bit of an reaction if you say you like it.
Obviously I like it but maybe I've taught myself to do so since I didnt eat it as a child.
>>
I had the opportunity to try it at my grandparents once when I was like 9, but obviously I didn't go for it just because of the smell. I could have invited myself over for it since then, but I didn't.
>>
>>22039633
I'm Malaysian. We eat durian and fermented fish sauce (budu) and fermented shrimp (belacan and cencalok). Durian smells like rotten onions x toilet. Budu is rotten anchovies. Belacan smells like a dead cat. Cencalok smells like ripe vomit. I get a feeling I would love surstromming.
>>
>>22039633
I had it as a kid, it was alright but it smells horribly.
>>22039831
You do see it in stockholm markets, not everywhere since it's a seasonal delicacy but it's not that wild to see.
>>
>>22039642
Really? Because I watched a video of a regular British guy eating it the traditional way and he said it was pretty okay.
>>
>>22039642
delicious man?
>>
I eat it twice a year. The smell is bad but not a problem unless you open the can indoors. It's available at most supermarkets
>>
>>22039633
>is it that bad or have people overdramatised it for internet views?
Both. There's a lot of overdramatic fags doing things for clicks, but apparently surstromming really doesn't age well (ironically) so it's very likely a lot of the cans Youtubers get are filled with nearly entirely decomposed fish and are basically expired.

This is the only guy I've seen who's given it a level-headed review and also explains the expiration problem.

>>22039633
Many moons ago I was in a surstromming thread and a guy said that people were blowing it out of proportion and it's just fine if you eat it right and he posted a video of a guy opening the can under water and eating it outside. I think that just about says it all. I still plan to try it some day.
