Is quality tableware worth it? Thinking about buying some Royal Doulton plates and cups. Not sure if I want the hand painted periwinkles though. Is quality tableware worth it?
>>
>>22047368
It's nicer to eat off good tablewear
>>
>>22047374
Does it clean better/more slick? More resilient? Less weight etc? What aside from aesthetics does quality tableware have over the dollar store plates?
>>

>What aside from aesthetics does quality tableware have over the dollar store plates?
nothing.
but then you gotta ask, "what aside from aesthetics does the dollar store plates have over just eating off a cutting board?"
both hold food.
both are study.
both wash and rinse well.
however, the nice dishes and cutlery are part of being a well rounded adult.
you really should separate yourself from living like ghetto trash.
the royal doulton is worth the price, the most expensive thing they have is like $200
unless you're in the habit of breaking dishes, a ceramic plate could technically last for an indefinite amount of time.

I thought true China had a glaze that was more slippery.

>are part of being a well rounded adult
Is this just rich snobs looking down on another?

So basically there is no reason to get plates unless you want prestige and to play apart of the fuck you poors game and keep up with the Jones's.

Screw that. If there really is no good solid reason why expensive plates and cups are better, I see no reason to get it. At least my .925 utensils are real silver and have actual value. I was hoping someone would have given me a reason that I never considered. I guess it's just plates and cups after all.
>>
>>22047446
>I thought true China had a glaze that was more slippery.
yeah, the glazing they do to make you think it's special.
they're real slick with that line.
>>
>>22047617
Is the glazing on the ENTIRE plate even the bottom? I hate the feel of unglazed ceramic. I know sometimes they purposefully don't glaze the bottom to prevent it from sliding on the table but I absolutely despise unglazed. Also what does it sound like when you scrape a fork against it? I hate scraping sounds.
>>
>>22047681
>when you scrape a fork against it
people do this where you live?
>>
>>22047693
No, but even by accident I can't stand this sound and will only buy plates that don't make an ungodly noise when doing so.

hear me out, anon.
silicone forks.

I'm a ceramicist. Quality tableware is not worth it and not important. "China," is generally porcelain or some bastardized porcelain adjacent clay, with painted accents. The gold in OP pic is either fake, or literal gold and is not machine washable - which is annoying. People wildly overprice pieces with gold luster. Most "china," nowadays is fake as shit and they're using stencils or even worse machines to design and apply the patterns. In the past they paid people to mass produce them.

Less weight generally means more skillful, if handmade, heavier generally means the artist was unable to reduce the weight of the piece with confidence of it surviving the firings without cracks.

>>22047383
>does it clean better
depends on how shitty you're comparing it to. i'd say no overall
>more resilient
yes
>less weight
not necessarily as cheap tableware is factory made and perfected

>>22047446
Most foodsafe glazes are glossy. There is not a special type of glaze that is more slippery.

>>22047681
It is very, very hard to create a piece with absolutely no flaws and no unglazed clay. I bet you're referring to pieces with a foot in the bottom, and the bottom of the foot is highly burnished, so it feels extremely smooth. It isn't glaze.

tl;dr - if you're broke, use cheap shit. If you're in the middle, it might be cool to have some artist made pieces, if you're rich, do u want u want. maybe commission an artist for a full set.
>>
Go to an op shop and buy a piece cheap and see how you like it. For me, it's not a necessity nor some sort of reflection of worth, but I like the aesthetics of quality and how it sounds when cutlery hits it
>>
>>22047368
I inherited 3 nice sets and the just sit in a cupboard, but if you have money and will use them I say go for it

>>22047777
Not OP but thanks for the knowledge

not really
there's not much real difference between it and average tableware in actual functionality. and unless you were upper class and not cleaning the dishes anyway was shit only brought out to impress guests even when it was a ubiquitous tradition.
so if you love showing off to guests or find a set you love go for it
and yes I gave a serious answer to a subtle shitpost because keeping up appearances is a kino old show
>>
>>22048284
It wasn't a shitpost. I just wanted to know more about quality tableware as it is something I rarely think about but use from time to time. You don't sometimes look at the mundane or everyday objects and think about them and what/why they are from time to time?
>>
>>22047402
Agree with this. I will openly call out friends to buy age-appropriate dishware, I refuse to eat off of plastic plates or shit from fucking walmart. The only time paper plates are acceptable is at a party or cookout/potluck. You can get good plates and dishware for cheap from three places:

The thrift store. Depending on the store, they sell the complete set, or you can go piecemeal. They regularly sell complete sets for 15-20 bucks, or individual items for 1-2 dollars each. So, you can buy a nice piece of table ware for the same price as a shit table item at Walmart or Kohls or whatever the fuck.

Restaurant Supply Stores. Good, solid, cheap, respectable, simple. Nothing fancy here.

Estate/Garage sales. Often sold in sets or in bulk.
>>
>>22048677
The fuck it matters? Retard. As long as it's hard and not paper.
>>
>>22048677
>thrift store dishes

God only knows how many homeless asses those dishes wiped
>>
>>22048702
Because it shows you have some level of personal self-respect. The poorest of the poor eat off of plastic because they literally can't fathom that maybe, just maybe, people associate plastic dishware with cheapness.

And whenever I go over to somebody's house and they have paper plates, I think they are too stupid to operate a sink, sponge, and a dishwasher. Or they are too poor or lazy. Again, zero fucking class.

My other favorite is people who buy plastic dishware because they have kids. I could see a baby or a toddler, but one of my friends has a 16 year old daughter and she prefers her stupid ass plastic mickey mouse plate. What a fucking joke. You use a plate to eat off of. It's not some autism aid for sensory stimulation or portion control. It's a fucking plate. After the age of 5, I expect a child to be disciplined enough to not break them.

Or maybe you just like eating microplastics when you use a steak knife on plastic? Or have you ever considered the face that plastic is relatively soft and slightly porous. Over time, it holds onto grease, stains (like tomato sauce), and residual odors much longer than non-porous materials. The inevitable surface scratches also create microscopic pockets that can harbor bacteria. If you take the time to prepare high-quality meals, serving it on a scratched, odor-retaining plastic surface undermines the effort put into the food. But then again if you can afford steak, you could afford a stoneware or ceramic plate, yeah? Moving away from plastic is also about prioritizing longevity and performance over immediate convenience. Just as cooking in a heavy cast-iron skillet or drinking from high-quality glassware elevates the experience, eating off real ceramic, stoneware, or tempered glass changes the daily ritual of a meal.

stfu already. You can't even comprehend the virtue of fine dinnerware.

You have to be very careful of lead even with modern stuff from home goods, watch that lead guy and dyor

>mentioning microplastics

Stopped right there. What a fucking pussy. We all eat a barrel of dirt before we die. Imagine caring about something so insignificant. Do you also cry in terror when a fly lands on you?

Get real.
