It's all about the bread. And butter. Everything else is optional. If you don't believe me, try one of the attached, fresh, when in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. It's just bread, butter, salt. You wouldn't call it a 'sandwich' but my point is still made.

a ham and cheese on white bread but the bread is so smushed it's almost translucent and some mayo is almost seeping through and the cheese is cut too thick for the sandwich.

Grilled chicken and avocado club from the Cheesecake Factory

The ham and cheese my mom used to pack me for lunch, with the crunch of lays chips inside.
But honestly these days, a super crunchy BLT with mayo, with fresh LT and crunchy B on toasted white bread.

For me it's bread, extra heavy mayonnaise, and almost anything else. I would only use butter if I'm not adding anything else.
